Quran 20:117 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn
Then We said ‘Adam indeed this is an enemy of yours and of your wife Eve read Hawwā’. So do not let him cause you both to be expelled from the Garden so that you then toil so that you then become fatigued by the toil of tillage sowing harvesting milling baking and otherwise — the statement is restricted to the mention of his Adam’s ‘toil’ because it is the man who has to strive to provide for his wife.
Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim
And there, We said to Adam: This - Iblis - is an avowed enemy to you and to your wife; let him not be the cause of ousting you from Paradise wherefore you suffer
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(20:117) At this, We said to Adam, *95 "He is an enemy to you and to your wife *96 . Be on your guard lest he should have you expelled from the Garden *97 and you find yourself in great distress.
So We said, "O Adam, indeed this meaning
*95) Here the Command, which was given to Prophet Adam, has not been mentioned, which was: " You must not eat the fruit of this tree. " This has been mentioned at other places but has been omitted here because the emphasis here is on this weakness of man that he is easily seduced by Satan in spite of the forewarnings and admonitions to this effect.
*96) Both knew that Satan was their enemy, for Adam himself had witnessed the demonstration of his enmity, when he had refused to bow down before him and declared in plain words, " I am better than he; Thou didst create me of tire and him of clay ".
( VII: 12, XXXVIII: 76, see also XV: 33 ).
" Should I bow before the one whom Thou hast created out of clay? " And then added, " Just consider was he worthy of this that Thou hast exalted him over me? " ( XVII: 61-b2 ).
Then Satan did not rest content with this bragging of superiority but evinced his jealousy by giving an open challenge that he would prove it by seducing Adam.
( VII: 16, 17; XV: 36-42; XVII: 62-6b; XXXVIII: 82-83 ).
*97) This was to forewarn both of them of the consequences of disobedience of the Command.
Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs
( Therefore We said: O Adam! This is an enemy unto thee and unto your wife ) Eve, ( so let him not drive you both out of the Garden ) if you obey him ( so that thou come to toil ) and toil as a consequence.
Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali
Then We said: "O Adam! Verily, this is an enemy to you and to your wife. So let him not get you both out of Paradise, so that you be distressed in misery.
