Quran 11:3 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn
And bidding you ‘Ask forgiveness of your Lord for your idolatry then repent return to Him through acts of obedience and He will give you in this world fair enjoyment in the way of pleasant living and abundant provision until a time appointed namely death and He will give in the Hereafter every person of merit in deed the due for his merit his reward. But if you turn away tawallaw one of the two tā’ letters of tatawallaw has been omitted in other words if you object I fear for you the chastisement of an awful day namely the Day of Resurrection.
Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim
And you had better invoke Allah, your Creator, for forgiveness and in lowliest plight do stand to Him repentant of the way you conduct yourselves in life. He shall make you enjoy good things in life up to a predetermined point of time. He shall bestow on every one of merit, here below, His divine favour that is commensurate with his merits and shall His grace abound in those entitled to it Hereafter And should they turn a deaf ear, then say to them: I only fear for you the punishment which shall be laid upon the damned on an unbearably Momentous Day

Surah Hud made the Prophet's Hair turn Gray
Abu `Isa At-Tirmidhi recorded from Ibn `Abbas that Abu Bakr said, "O Messenger of Allah, verily your hair has turned gray." The Prophet replied,
«شَيَّبَتْنِي هُودٌ وَالْوَاقِعَةُ وَالْمُرْسَلَاتُ وَعَمَّ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ وَإِذَا الشَّمْسُ كُوِّرَت»
( Surahs Hud, Al-Waqi`ah, Al-Mursalat, `Amma Yatasa'lun An-Naba' and Idhash-Shamsu Kuwwirat At-Takwir have turned my hair gray. ) In another narration he said,
«هُودٌ وَأَخَوَاتُهَا»
( Surah Hud and its sisters... )
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The Qur'an and its Call to ( worship ) Allah Alone
A discussion concerning the letters of the alphabet ( which appear at the beginning of some chapters of the Qur'an ) has already preceded at the beginning of Surat Al-Baqarah.
That discussion is sufficient without any need for repetition here.
Concerning Allah's statement,
( The Ayat whereof are perfect and then explained in detail ) This means perfect in its wording, detailed in its meaning.
Thus, it is complete in its form and its meaning.
This interpretation was reported from Mujahid and Qatadah, and Ibn Jarir At-Tabari preferred it.
Concerning the meaning of Allah's statement,
( from One (Allah ), Who is All-Wise, Well-Acquainted.) This means that it ( the Qur'an ) is from Allah, Who is Most Wise in His statements and His Laws, and Most Aware of the final outcome of matters.
( (Saying ) worship none but Allah.) This means that this Qur'an descended, perfect and detailed, with the purpose of Allah's worship alone, without any partners.
This is similar to the statement of Allah, the Exalted,
( And We did not send any Messenger before you but We revealed to him (saying ): There is no God but I, so worship Me.) 21:25 It is similar to Allah's statement,
( And verily, We have sent among every Ummah a Messenger (proclaiming ): `Worship Allah ( Alone ), and avoid Taghut ( calling false deities. )')16:36 In reference to Allah's statement,
( Verily, I am unto you from Him a warner and a bringer of glad tidings. ) This means, "Verily, I am unto you a warner of the punishment if you oppose Him ( Allah ), and a bringer of the good news of reward if you obey Him." This meaning has been recorded in the authentic Hadith which states that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ascended mount As-Safa and called out to his near relatives of the Quraysh tribe.
When they gathered around him, he said,
«يَا مَعْشَرَ قُرَيْشٍ أَرَأَيْتُمْ لَوْ أَخْبَرْتُكُمْ أَنَّ خَيْلًا تُصَبِّحُكُمْ أَلَسْتُمْ مُصَدِّقِيَّ؟»
( O people of Quraysh, if I informed you that a cavalry was going to attack you in the morning, would you not believe me ) They replied, "We have not found you to be a liar." He said,
«فَإِنِّي نَذِيرٌ لَكُمْ بَيْنَ يَدَي عَذَابٍ شَدِيد»
( Verily I am a warner unto you before a severe punishment. ) Concerning His statement,
( And (commanding you ): `Seek the forgiveness of your Lord, and turn to Him in repentance, that He may grant you good enjoyment, for a term appointed, and bestow His abounding grace to every owner of grace.) This means, "I am commanding you to seek forgiveness from previous sins and to turn to Allah from future sins, and thereafter you abide by that."
( that He may grant you good enjoyment, ) This is in reference to this worldly life.
( for a term appointed, and bestow His abounding grace to every owner of grace. ) This refers to the Hereafter, according to Qatadah.
"This is like the statement of Allah,
( Whoever works righteousness -- whether male or female -- while a true believer, verily to him We will give a good life. )16:97 Concerning Allah's statement,
( But if you turn away, then I fear for you the torment of a Great Day. ) This is a severe threat for whoever turns away from the commandments of Allah, the Exalted, and rejects His Messengers.
Verily, the punishment will afflict such a person on the Day of Resurrection and there will be no escape from it.
( To Allah is your return, ) This is means your return on the Day of Judgement.
( and He is able to do all things. ) This means that He is capable of doing whatever He wishes, whether it be goodness towards His Awliya' ( friends and allies ), or vengeance upon His enemies.
This also includes His ability to repeat the creation of His creatures on the Day of Resurrection.
This section encourages fear, just as the previous section encourages hope.
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(11:3) that you may seek forgiveness of your Lord and turn to Him in repentance whereupon He will grant you a fair enjoyment of life until an appointed term, *3 and will bestow favour on everyone who merits favour. *4 But should you turn away (from the truth), I fear for you the chastisement of an Awesome Day.
And [saying], "Seek forgiveness of your Lord meaning
*3).
If a person turns to God in sincere devotion, He will enable him to spend his life felicitously.
God will lavish upon him His bounties, confer a variety of benedictions, provide a life of prosperity, grant peace and tranquillity, and cause him to live honourably rather than in ignominy and disgrace.
The same idea has been brought forth elsewhere in the Qur'an in the following words:
Whoever acts righteously - whether male or female - the while he is a believer, We will surely grant him a clean life .
.
.
( al-Nahl 16: 97 ).
This verse dispels the Satanic misconception to which simpletons often succumb.
The misconception consists of believing that piety, honesty and responsible behaviour might at the most lead to man's well-being in the Next Life, but they certainly play havoc with his life in the present world.
Under this mistaken notion it is believed that good people are inevitably destined to live in abject poverty and utter misery.
In refuting this misconception, God makes it clear that righteous behaviour is conducive to man's success in both worlds.
Those who live a righteous and God-fearing life will achieve success and esteemed position in this world as in the Next.
For, a position of true honour in this world falls only to those who, out of their devotion to God, act righteously, who are known for their excellent morals, who adhere to propriety in their dealings with others, who are considered by people to be trustworthy, of whom all expect nothing but goodness and benevolence, and of whom none entertains the fear of any evil.
Implicit in the Qur'anic expression 'a fair enjoyment of life' is another point which should not escape our attention.
According to the Qur'an, 'enjoyment of life' is of two kinds: one.
which leads people, who are heedless of God, to temptations with the result that they immerse themselves in worldliness and forget God even more.
Thus, 'enjoyment of life', though apparently a divine blessing, proves a curse.
It becomes the precursor of God's punishment.
This is what the Qur'an brands as 'illusory enjoyment'.
( See Al 'Imran 3: 185; al-Hadid 57: 20 - Ed. ) By contrast, the other kind of enjoyment of life adds to a person's prosperity and physical vitality in such a way that he becomes even more grateful to God.
This kind of 'enjoyment of life' prompts man to fulfil the obligations incumbent upon him towards God, towards God's creatures and towards himself.
Strengthened by the resources provided by God, man finds himself in a stronger position to effectively promote the cause of good and righteousness and to strive to obliterate evil and mischief.
This is the Qur'anic concept of 'fair enjoyment of life' - an enjoyment which does not end with the life of this world, but extends to the Next Life as well.
*4).
The more a person excels in moral conduct and good deeds, the higher will be the status that God confers upon him.
God does not let anyone's good deeds go to waste.
In the same way as God does not show any appreciation for evil, He does not show any lack of appreciation for goodness and virtue.
In God's kingdom there is no place for the kind of atrocious injustice and stupidity to which a Persian poet has given expression in the following couplet:
The Arabian steed lies suffering from the wounds of the saddle-pack while a golden necklace adorns the neck of a donkey! God deals with His creatures in such a way that anyone who deserves a reward, is fully granted that reward.
