Quran 16:39 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn
That He may make clear to them li-yubayyina is semantically connected to an implied yab‘athuhum ‘He will resurrect them’ what they differ with believers in of matters of religion by punishing them and rewarding the believers and that the disbelievers may know that they were liars when they denied the Resurrection.
Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim
It is an act of mercy to both the guilty and the innocent- that Allah resurrects the dead and restores them to life to illucidate to them the strained points upon which the whole unreasoning turned and the points which were once in the heat of. dispute so that the infidels who denied Him and/or His statutes realize how unjust they were to themselves and to others to justify their falsehood and assert it as true
Quran 16:39 Tafsir Ibn Kathir
The Resurrection after Death is true, there is Wisdom behind it, and it is easy for Allah
Allah tells us that the idolators swore by Allah their strongest oaths, meaning that they made oaths swore fervently that Allah would not resurrect the one who died.
They considered that to be improbable, and did not believe the Messengers when they told them about that, swearing that it could not happen.
Allah said, refuting them:
بَلَى
( Yes ), meaning it will indeed happen,
( a promise (binding ) upon Him in truth,) - meaning it is inevitable,
( but most of mankind know not. ) means, because of their ignorance they oppose the Messengers and fall into disbelief.
Then Allah mentions His wisdom and the reason why He will resurrect mankind physically on the Day of Calling ( between the people of Fire and of Paradise ).
He says,
( In order that He may make clear to them ) means, to mankind,
( what they differed over, ) means, every dispute.
( that He may requite those who do evil with that which they have done (i.
e.
punish them in Hell ), and reward those who do good, with what is best ( i.e.
Paradise ).) ( 53:31 )
( and so that those who disbelieved may know that they were liars. ) meaning that they lied in their oaths and their swearing that Allah would not resurrect those who die.
Thus they will be pushed down by force to the Fire with horrible force on the Day of Resurrection, and the guards of Hell will say to them:
هَـذِهِ النَّارُ الَّتِى كُنتُم بِهَا تُكَذِّبُونَ - أَفَسِحْرٌ هَـذَا أَمْ أَنتُمْ لاَ تُبْصِرُونَ - اصْلَوْهَا فَاصْبِرُواْ أَوْ لاَ تَصْبِرُواْ سَوَآءٌ عَلَيْكُمْ إِنَّمَا تُجْزَوْنَ مَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ
( This is the Fire which you used to belie.
Is this magic or do you not see Taste its heat, and whether you are tolerant of it or intolerant of it - it is all the same.
You are only being requited for what you have done. ) ( 52:14-16 ).
Then Allah tells us about His ability to do whatever He wills, and that nothing is impossible for Him on earth or in heaven.
When He wants a thing, all He has to do is say to it "Be!" and it is.
The Resurrection is one such thing, when He wants it to happen, all He will have to do is issue the command once, and it will happen as He wills, as He says:
وَمَآ أَمْرُنَآ إِلاَّ وَحِدَةٌ كَلَمْحٍ بِالْبَصَرِ
( And Our commandment is but one as the twinkling of an eye ) ( 54:50 ) and,
( The creation of you all and the resurrection of you all are only as (the creation and resurrection of ) a single person.
) 31:28 And in this Ayah, Allah says:
إِنَّمَا قَوْلُنَا لِشَىْءٍ إِذَآ أَرَدْنَاهُ أَن نَّقُولَ لَهُ كُنْ فَيَكُونُ
( Verily, Our Word to a thing when We intend it, is only that We say to it: "Be!" - and it is. ) meaning, We issue the command once, and then it happens.
Allah does not need to repeat or confirm whatever He commands, because there is nothing that can stop Him or oppose Him.
He is the One, the Compelling, the Almighty, whose power, might and dominion have subjected all things.
None has the right to be worshipped except Him, and there is no Lord other than Him.
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(16:39) And It must be fulfilled so that He may reveal to them that thing about which thay are differing, and that the disbelievers might know that they were liars. *35
[It is] so He will make clear meaning
*35) n v.
39 those two things have been stated which rationally and morally require that there must be Resurrection and Life-after-death, that is: ( 1 ) to reveal what the reality was, and ( 2 ) to reward or punish people in accordance with the right or wrong stand they took about it in this world.
It is common knowledge that since the creation of Man on the Earth there have been many differences regarding the Reality which have been sowing dissension between families, nations and races.
These have also led to the formation of many different societies, cultures and creeds on different theories.
In every age millions of the torch-bearers of each of these theories have been putting at stake their all-life, property, honour-to propagate and defend their favourite theory.
Nay, there has aIways been such a bitter conflict between them that each group tried to annihilate the other, who, in his turn, stuck to it to the last.
This being the case, common sense demands that such far-reaching and serious differences should be cleared some time or other, so as to decide with certainty what was right and what was wrong, who was in the right and who was in the wrong.
Obviously, it is not possible to lift the curtain from the Reality in this world so as to reveal things in their true perspective.
This is because the system on which this world has been created does not allow this.
Therefore, there should be another world to fulfil this demand of common sense.
This is not the demand of common sense alone but also of the moral sense, which requires that the partners in this conflict should be rewarded or punished according to right or wrong, just or unjust part they played in it.
For, some of these committed cruelties on the others, who had to make sacrifices for their cause.
Then each one should also bear the responsibility for formulating and practising a moral or immoral philosophy which influenced millions and billions of others for better or worse.
Moral sense demands that there should be a time for the moral consequences to take their due course.
As this is not possible in this world there should be another world for the purpose.

( That he may explain unto them ) to the people of Mecca ( that wherein they differ ) that which they oppose in the matter of Religion, ( and that those who disbelieved ) in Muhammad ( pbuh ) and in the Qur’an and the Day of Judgement ( may know that they were liars ) in this worldly life when they claimed that there is no Paradise, hell, resurrection or reckoning.
Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali
In order that He may make manifest to them the truth of that wherein they differ, and that those who disbelieved (in Resurrection, and in the Oneness of Allah) may know that they were liars.
