Quran 29:40 Surah Ankabut ayat 40 Tafsir Ibn Katheer in English
29:40 So each We seized for his sin; and among them were those upon whom We sent a storm of stones, and among them were those who were seized by the blast [from the sky], and among them were those whom We caused the earth to swallow, and among them were those whom We drowned. And Allah would not have wronged them, but it was they who were wronging themselves.

Quran 29:40 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn
So each of those mentioned We seized for his sin; and among them were some upon whom We unleashed a squall of stones as in the case of the people of Lot and among them were some who were seized by the Cry such as Thamūd and among them were some whom We made the earth swallow such as Korah and among them were some whom We drowned like the people of Noah Pharaoh and his people. And God never wronged them by chastising them for having committed no sin but they wronged themselves by committing sins.
Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim
Each one of them did We penalize with what was commensurate with his evil deed. Among them were those against whom We sent a whirlwind and sand dunes and those who were overtaken by a merciless blast and those whom We eclipsed in one swallow by the yawning chasm We created beneath them and among them were those whom We drowned. And never was it Allahs attribute to do them injustice but it was they who wronged themselves
Quran 29:40 Tafsir Ibn Kathir
The Destruction of Nations Who rejected Their Messengers
Allah tells us about these nations who disbelieved in their Messengers, and how He destroyed them and sent various kinds of punishments and vengeance upon them.
`Ad, the people of Hud, peace be upon him, used to live in the Ahqaf ( curved sand-hills ), near Hadramawt, in the Yemen.
Thamud, the people of Salih, lived in Al-Hijr, near Wadi Al-Qura.
The Arabs used to know their dwelling place very well, and they often used to pass by it.
Qarun was the owner of great wealth and had the keys to immense treasures.
Fir`awn, the king of Egypt at the time of Musa, and his minister Haman were two Coptics who disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger, peace be upon him.
( So, We punished each for his sins, ) their punishments fit their crimes.
( of them were some on whom We sent a Hasib, ) This was the case with `Ad, and this happened because they said: "Who is stronger than us" So, there came upon them a violent, intensely cold wind, which was very strong and carried pebbles which it threw upon them.
It carried them through the air, lifting a man up to the sky and then hurling him headlong to the ground, so that his head split and he was left as a body without a head, like uprooted stems of date palms.
( and of them were some who were overtaken by As-Sayhah, ) This is what happened to Thamud, against whom evidence was established because of the she-camel who came forth when the rock was split, exactly as they had asked for.
Yet despite that they did not believe, rather they persisted in their evil behavior and disbelief, and threatening to expel Allah's Prophet Salih and the believers with him, or to stone them.
So the Sayhah struck them, taking away their powers of speech and movement.
( and of them were some whom We caused the earth to swallow, ) This refers to Qarun who transgressed, he was evil and arrogant.
He disobeyed his Lord, the Most High, and paraded through the land in a boastful manner, filled with self-admiration, thinking that he was better than others.
He showed off as he walked, so Allah caused the earth to swallow him and his house, and he will continue sinking into it until the Day of Resurrection.
( and of them were some whom We drowned. ) This refers to Fir`awn, his minister Haman and their troops, all of whom were drowned in a single morning, not one of them escaped.
( It was not Allah Who wronged them, ) in what He did to them,
( but they wronged themselves. ) that happened to them as a punishment for what they did with their own hands.
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(29:40) So We seized each for their sin. We let loose upon some a violent tornado with showers of stones; *68 some were overtaken by a mighty Cry; *69 some were caused to be swallowed up by the earth, *70 and some We drowned. *71 Allah would not wrong them, but it is they who wronged themselves. *72
So each We seized for his sin; meaning
*68) That is, `Ad who were subjected to a furious windstorm which blew on them for seven nights and eight days continuously.
*69) That is, Thamud.
*70) That is, Korah.
*71) That is, Pharaoh and Haman.
*72) The stories that have been related in the foregoing verses, have been addressed and directed both to the believers and to the disbelievers.
To the believers they have been addressed so that they do not feel discouraged and distressed at heart, and keep aloft the banner of the Truth firmly and patiently even in the face of the severe persecutions and hardships, and should have full faith in Allah that His succour shall ultimately come, and He will frustrate the designs of the wicked people and make the Word of the Truth to prevail.
On the other hand, these have been addressed to those wicked people also, who in their arrogance were bent upon exterminating the Islamic movement.
They have been warned to the effect: "You have formed a wrong opinion about Allah's forbearance and clemency.
You think; that His is a lawless Kingdom.
If you have not been seized so far for your rebellion and your tyrannies and wicked deeds and have been granted a long respite so that you may reform yourselves, you have inferred that there exists no power whatever which can call you to account, and that one can go on doing whatever one likes endlessly on this earth.
This misconception will ultimately lead you to the same doom that has already been met by the peoples of Noah and Lot and Shu`aib, and experienced by `Ad and Thamud, and seen by Korah and Pharaoh.

Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs
( So We took each one ) each folk ( in his sin ) while in their state of idolatry; ( of them was he on whom We sent a hurricane ) of stones: the people of Lot, ( and of them was he who was overtaken by the (Awful ) Cry) as punishment: the people of Shu’ayb and Salih, ( and of them was he whom We caused the earth to swallow ) Korah and those with him, ( and of them was he whom We drowned ) in the sea: Pharaoh and his host. ( It was not for Allah to wrong them ) by destroying them, ( but they wronged themselves ) through disbelief, idolatry and giving the lie to the messengers.
Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali
So We punished each (of them) for his sins, of them were some on whom We sent Hasiban (a violent wind with shower of stones) [as the people of Lout (Lot)], and of them were some who were overtaken by As-Saihah [torment - awful cry, etc. (as Thamud or Shu'aib's people)], and of them were some whom We caused the earth to swallow [as Qarun (Korah)], and of them were some whom We drowned [as the people of Nuh (Noah), or Fir'aun (Pharaoh) and his people]. It was not Allah Who wronged them, but they wronged themselves.
