Quran 25:46 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn
Then We retract it the extended shadow to Us by gentle retraction subtle retraction through the rising of the sun.
Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim
And then We reduce it to a smaller compass and make it gradually disappear - having been made to contract and vanish by the same invisible hand that made it and creaked it
Quran 25:46 Tafsir Ibn Kathir
Evidence of the existence of the Creator and the extent of His Power
Here Allah begins explaining the evidence for His existence and His perfect power to create various things and pairs of opposites.
Allah says:
( Have you not seen how your Lord spread the shadow. ) Ibn `Abbas, Ibn `Umar, Abu Al-`Aliyah, Abu Malik, Masruq, Mujahid, Sa`id bin Jubayr, An-Nakha`i, Ad-Dahhak, Al-Hasan, Qatadah, As-Suddi and others said, "This refers to the period from the beginning of the dawn until the sun rises."
( If He willed, He could have made it still ) meaning, immobile, never changing.
This is like the Ayat:
قُلْ أَرَأَيْتُمْ إِن جَعَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْكُمُ الَّيْلَ سَرْمَداً
( Say : "Tell me! If Allah made the night continuous for you..." ) ( 28:71 )
( but We have made the sun its guide. ) means, were it not for the sun rising, it would not be there, for a thing can only be known in contrast to its opposite.
Qatadah and As-Suddi said, "The sun is a guide which follows the shade until the shade disappears.
"
( Then We withdraw it towards Ourselves -- a gradual withdrawal. ) This refers to the shade.
( gradual ) meaning slowly.
As-Suddi said: "A gentle, concealed, withdrawal until there is no shade left on earth except under a roof or a tree, and the sun is shining on whatever is above it."
( a gradual withdrawal. ) Ayyub bin Musa said: "Little by little.
( And it is He Who makes the night a covering for you, ) It covers and conceals all things.
This is like the Ayah:
وَالَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَى
( By the night as it envelops ) ( 92:1 ).
( and the sleep a repose, ) means, a halt to movement so that bodies may rest.
For the faculties and limbs get tired from their constant movement during the day when one goes out to earn a living.
When night comes, and it becomes quiet, they stop moving, and rest; so sleep provides a rejuvenation for both the body and the soul.
( and makes the day Nushur ) meaning, people get up and go out to earn a living and attend to their business.
This is like the Ayah:
وَمِن رَّحْمَتِهِ جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ لِتَسْكُنُواْ فِيهِ وَلِتَبتَغُواْ مِن فَضْلِهِ
( It is out of His mercy that He has made for you the night and the day that you may rest therein and that you may seek of His bounty... ) ( 28:73 )
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(25:46) then (as the sun climbs up), We roll it up little by little towards Ourselves. *59
Then We hold it in hand for meaning
*59) " We roll it up......Curselves ": " We annihilate it or cause it to disappear ", for everything which is annihilated returns to Allah, because everything comes from Elim and returns to Him.
The Qur'an has used the phenomenon of the shadow caused by the sun for two purposes.
(fit is taken literally, it is meant to warn the disbelievers that they should learn a lesson from this and should not behave like cattle, as if to say, " If you had considered the benefits of the shadow in regard to your everyday experience, you would have accepted without any hesitation the Doctrine of Tauhid.
Had the shadow been constant, there would have been no life en earth, for life depends on the light and heat of the sun.
On the other hand, if there had been no shadow at all, the constant heat and light of the sun would have made life impossible.
Besides this, if there had been sudden changes in the sun and the shadow, they would not have been able to endure it for long; therefore you should reflect on this phenomenon and understand it well that it has been so ordained by the AII-Wise and the AII-Powerful Creator so that it always increases or decreases gradually in accordance with fixed natural laws.
Thus it is obvious that it could not have come into existence by itself nor produced by blind mechanisms nor functioned so regularly and continuously under many independent gods. "
But if it is taken in the metaphorical sense, there is between the lines a subtle suggestion, and it is this: Just as the shadow dces not remain in one and the same state, likewise the shadow of disbelief and shirk, which appears to have spread far and wide, will begin to shorten as the " Sun " of Guidance gradually rises; but it requires patience, for Allah never brings about sudden changes.

Then We withdraw it to Us a gradual concealed withdrawal.
We try our best to translate, keeping in mind the Italian saying: "Traduttore, traditore", which means: "Translation is a betrayal of the original text".
