Quran 30:55 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn
And on the Day when the Hour comes the guilty the disbelievers shall swear that they had not remained more than an hour in the grave. God exalted be He says That is how they use to be deceived how they used to be turned away from the truth — the Resurrection — similar to the way in which they have now been turned away from the real truth about how long they had remained.
Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim
And the Day when the Final Hour has come to pass, the wicked steeped in crime shall swear they only reposed for an hour. And just as they shall make the wrong estimate of time, similarly they will have done in life, they wrongly estimate the truth and they favour declination from religion
Quran 30:55 Tafsir Ibn Kathir
The Ignorance of the Disbelievers in this World and in the Hereafter
Here Allah tells us of the ignorance of the disbelievers in this world and in the Hereafter.
In this world they worship idols, and in the Hereafter they will also display great ignorance.
They will swear by Allah that they did not even stay for one hour in this world.
They will mean that there was not enough time given to establish proof against them which would leave them with no excuse.
Allah says:
( thus were they ever deluded.
And those who have been bestowed with knowledge and Faith will say: "Indeed you have stayed according to the decree of Allah, until the Day of Resurrection..." ) The believers who have knowledge of the Hereafter will respond to them, just as they established the proof of Allah against them in this world.
When they swear that they did not stay even one hour in this world, they will say to them:
لَقَدْ لَبِثْتُمْ فِى كِتَـبِ اللَّهِ
( Indeed you have stayed according to the decree of Allah, ) meaning, the Book of deeds,
( until the Day of Resurrection; ) means, `from the day when you were created until the day you were resurrected.
'
( but you knew not. ) Allah says:
( So, on that Day ) meaning, the Day of Resurrection,
( no excuse of theirs will avail those who did wrong, ) means, their excuses for what they did.
( nor will they be allowed (then ) to return to seek ( Allah's ) pleasure.) means, they will not be allowed to return to this world.
This is like the Ayah,
( and if they seek to please (Allah ), yet they are not of those who will ever be allowed to please ( Allah )) ( 41:24 ).
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(30:55) On that Day when the Hour will come to pass *80 the wicked shall swear that they had stayed (in the world) no more than an hour. *81 Thus they used to be deceived in the life of the world. *82
And the Day the Hour appears the meaning
*80) That is, Resurrection, which is being foretold here.
*81) That is, from the time of death till Resurrection.
Even if thousands of years might have elapsed since their death they will feel that they had gone to sleep a few hours earlier and then a sudden calamity had roused them froth sleep.
*82) That is, " They used to make similar wrong estimates in the world, There also they lacked the realization of Reality, and therefore, used to assert there was going to be no Resurrection, no life-after-death, and no too.
that accountability before God. "

Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs
( And on the day ) which is the Day of Judgement ( when the Hour riseth the guilty will vow ) those who associate partners with Allah will swear ( that they did tarry ) in their graves ( but an hour thus ) they will be in disbelief in the Hereafter ( were they ever deceived ) just as they disbelieved in the life of this world.
Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali
And on the Day that the Hour will be established, the Mujrimun (criminals, disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, etc.) will swear that they stayed not but an hour, thus were they ever deluded [away from the truth (i.e. they used to tell lies and take false oaths, and turn away from the truth) in this life of the world)].
We try our best to translate, keeping in mind the Italian saying: "Traduttore, traditore", which means: "Translation is a betrayal of the original text".
