Quran 61:8 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn
They desire to extinguish li-yutfi’ū is in the subjunctive form because of an implicit an sc. an yutfi’ū the lām being extra the light of God His Law and His proofs with their mouths with their sayings that this is sorcery or poetry or soothsaying; but God will perfect He will manifest His light mutimmun nūrahu some have read this in the form of a genitive annextation mutimmu nūrihi though the disbelievers be averse to this.
Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim
They wish they could, with all the feeling in their minds directed toward falsifying the truth, quench the very light of Allah by word of mouth, (that is by propagating false rumours and uttering error against Him). But Allah shall continue to send His illumination -the Quran- which proceeds from Him until the souls have been lit by the divine truth and enlightenment has prevailed albeit this is hateful to those who refuse to acknowledge the truth
Quran 61:8 Tafsir Ibn Kathir
The Most Unjust among all People
Allah said,
وَمَنْ أَظْلَمُ مِمَّنِ افْتَرَى عَلَى اللَّهِ الْكَذِبَ وَهُوَ يُدْعَى إِلَى الإِسْلاَمِ
( And who does more wrong than the one who invents a lie against Allah, while he is being invited to Islam ) meaning, none is more unjust than he who lies about Allah and calls upon rivals and associates partners with Him, even while he is being invited to Tawhid and sincerely worshipping Him.
This is why Allah said,
وَاللَّهُ لاَ يَهْدِى الْقَوْمَ الظَّـلِمِينَ
( And Allah guides not the people who are wrongdoers. ) Allah said,
يُرِيدُونَ لِيُطْفِئُواْ نُورَ اللَّهِ بِأَفْوَهِهِمْ
( They intend to put out the Light of Allah with their mouths. ) indicating that the disbelievers will try to contradict the truth with falsehood.
Their attempts are similar to one's attempt to extinguish the sun with his mouth, which is impossible.
Likewise is the case of their attempt to extinguish truth.
So Allah said,
( But Allah will bring His Light to perfection even though the disbelievers hate (it ).
He it is Who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to make it victorious over all ( other ) religions even though the idolators hate ( it ).) We explained the meanings of similar Ayat before, in the Tafsir of Surah Bara'ah.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah.
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(61:8) They seek to blow out Allah's Light with their mouths, but Allah has decreed that He shall perfect His Light, much as the disbelievers may dislike it. *12
They want to extinguish the light of meaning
*12) One should bear in mind that these verses were sent down in A.H.
3 after the Battle of Uhud, when Islam was confined only to the city of Madinah, the Muslims were only a few thousands in number, and entire Arabia was bent upon wiping out this religion.
The defeat that the Muslims had suffered at Uhud, had sullied their image of power and the tribes of the surrounding areas had been emboldened.
Under such conditions it was said: " No one will succeed in blowing out this Light of Allah, but it will shine forth in all fullness and spread throughout the world. " This was a clear prediction which literally came true.
Who could know apart from Allah at that time what was the future of Islam? Human eyes could only sec that it was a flickering candle and violent winds were blowing to put it out for ever.

Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs
( Fain would they ) i.e. the Jews and Christians ( put out the light of Allah ) to abort the religion of Allah; and it is said this means: to abort the Book of Allah: the Qur’an, ( with their mouths ) with their tongues and lies, ( but Allah will perfect His light ) but Allah will manifest His religion and Book ( however much the disbelievers are averse ) even though the Jews, Christians and pagan Arabs dislike its happening.
Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali
They intend to put out the Light of Allah (i.e. the religion of Islam, this Quran, and Prophet Muhammad SAW) with their mouths. But Allah will complete His Light even though the disbelievers hate (it).
We try our best to translate, keeping in mind the Italian saying: "Traduttore, traditore", which means: "Translation is a betrayal of the original text".
