Quran 28:80 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn
But those to whom knowledge had been given knowledge of what God had promised in the Hereafter said to them ‘Woe to you! waylakum is an expression of reprimand God’s reward of Paradise in the Hereafter is better for him who believes and acts righteously than what Korah has been given in this world; and none will obtain it namely the Paradise that is given as a reward except those who are steadfast’ in their adherence to obedience and refrain from disobedience.
Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim
Whereas those gifted with divine and spiritual knowledge exclaimed: Woe betide you -people of vanities-,the reward conferred by Allah Hereafter is infinitely better for those whose hearts reflect the image of religious and spiritual virtues and their deeds wisdom and piety, a status attained only by the patient who exercise forbearance under provocation, bear with others their faults and limitations and sit like patience on a monument smiling at grief
Quran 28:80 Tafsir Ibn Kathir
How Qarun went forth in His Finery, and His People's Comments
Allah tells us how Qarun went forth one day before his people with his magnificent regalia; wearing his fine clothes, accompanied by his fine horses, his servants and retinue.
When those whose desires and inclinations were for the world saw his adornments and splendor, they wished that they could have the same as he had been given, and said:
يلَيْتَ لَنَا مِثْلَ مَآ أُوتِىَ قَـرُونُ إِنَّهُ لَذُو حَظٍّ عَظِيمٍ
( Ah, would that we had the like of what Qarun has been given! Verily, he is the owner of a great fortune. ) meaning, `he is very lucky and has a great share in this world.' When the people of beneficial knowledge heard this, they said to them:
وَيْلَكُمْ ثَوَابُ اللَّهِ خَيْرٌ لِّمَنْ ءَامَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَـلِحاً
( Woe to you! The reward of Allah is better for those who believe and do righteous deeds, ) `Allah's reward to His believing, righteous servants in the Hereafter is better than what you see,' as is reported in the authentic Hadith:
( Allah has prepared for His righteous servants what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and the heart of a human cannot comprehend.
Recite, if you wish: (No person knows what is kept hidden for them of joy as a reward for what they used to do. )) ( 32:17 ).
وَلاَ يُلَقَّاهَآ إِلاَّ الصَّـبِرُونَ
( and this none shall attain except the patient. ) As-Suddi said: "None shall reach Paradise except for the patient" -- as if this were the completion of the statement made by the people of knowledge.
Ibn Jarir said, "This applies only to those who patiently forsake the love of this world, seeking the Hereafter.
It is as if this is part of what the people of knowledge said, but it is made part of the Words of Allah, stating this fact."
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(28:80) But those who possessed the knowledge, said, "Alas for you ! Allah's reward is better for him who believes and does good works, and this fortune is attained only by those who show patience." *100
But those who had been given knowledge meaning
*100) That is, " 'This kind of character and the way of thinking and the hounty of Allah's reward falls to the lot of only those who stick firmly and steadfastly and patiently to the lawful ways in life, whether by so doing they are able to earn only a bare living, or are enabled to become millionaires, but are never inclined to follow the unlawful ways even if they promise aII the benefits and wealth of the world.
In this verse, "Allah's reward" means the bounteous provision that is gained by man in the world and the Hereafter as a result of labour acrd toil undertaken within the bounds set by Allah; and "patience" means to have control over one's emotions and desires, to stick to honesty and righteousness as against greed and lust, to bear the losses that one may have to incur on account of the truth and justice, to spurn the gains that might accrue from employing unlawful devices, to remain content and satisfied with the lawful earning even if it is meagre and insufficient, to eschew feelings of envy and jealousy at the splendour of the corrupt people and avoid ;even casting a glance at it, and to be satisfied with the thought that for an honest man the colourless purity that Allah has granted him by His grace is better than the lustrous filth of evil and corruption.
As for "fortune" , it implies Allah's reward as well as the pure mentality by virtue of which a believing and righteous person finds it easier to suffer hunger and starvation than become a multi-millionaire by adopting dishonest and corrupt ways and means. "

But those who had been given knowledge) the knowledge of abstinence and trust in Allah ( said ) to the desirous ones: ( Woe unto you! ) may Allah straiten this worldly life for you! ( The reward of Allah ) in Paradise ( for him who believeth ) in Allah and in Moses ( and doeth right ) sincerely between him and his Lord ( is better, and only the steadfast will obtain it ) only those who are patient in fulfilling the commands of Allah and in withstanding misfortunes will obtain Paradise; it is also said that this means: no one will be given success to enjoin good and forbid evil except those who are patient in fulfilling the commands of Allah and withstanding misfortunes.
Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali
But those who had been given (religious) knowledge said: "Woe to you! The Reward of Allah (in the Hereafter) is better for those who believe and do righteous good deeds, and this none shall attain except those who are patient (in following the truth)."
