और यदि जब तुम स्त्रियों को तलाक़ दे दो और वे अपनी निश्चित अवधि (इद्दत) को पहुँच जाएँ, जो सामान्य नियम के अनुसार उन्हें रोक लो या सामान्य नियम के अनुसार उन्हें विदा कर दो। और तुम उन्हें नुक़सान पहुँचाने के ध्येय से न रोको कि ज़्यादती करो। और जो ऐसा करेगा, तो उसने स्वयं अपने ही ऊपर ज़ुल्म किया। और अल्लाह की आयतों को परिहास का विषय न बनाओ, और अल्लाह की कृपा जो तुम पर हुई है उसे याद रखो और उस किताब और तत्वदर्शिता (हिकमत) को याद रखो जो उसने तुम पर उतारी है, जिसके द्वारा वह तुम्हें नसीहत करता है। और अल्लाह का डर रखो और भली-भाँति जान लो कि अल्लाह हर चीज को जाननेवाला है

اور جب تم عورتوں کو (دو دفعہ) طلاق دے چکو اور ان کی عدت پوری ہوجائے تو انہیں یا تو حسن سلوک سے نکاح میں رہنے دو یا بطریق شائستہ رخصت کردو اور اس نیت سے ان کو نکاح میں نہ رہنے دینا چاہئے کہ انہیں تکلیف دو اور ان پر زیادتی کرو۔ اور جو ایسا کرے گا وہ اپنا ہی نقصان کرے گا اور خدا کے احکام کو ہنسی (اور کھیل) نہ بناؤ اور خدا نے تم کو جو نعمتیں بخشی ہیں اور تم پر جو کتاب اور دانائی کی باتیں نازل کی ہیں جن سے وہ تمہیں نصیحت فرماتا ہے ان کو یاد کرو۔ اور خدا سے ڈرتے رہو اور جان رکھوکہ خدا ہر چیز سے واقف ہے

(2:231) And when you have divorced your wives and they are about to complete their prescribed term, then either retain them gracefully or release them generously. It is transgression to retain them merely for harassment; and whoever' does that indeed wrongs his own self. *254 Do not play with Allah's Commandments, and remember that Allah has blessed you with a great favour. He admonishes you to show due respect to the Book and the Wisdom He has sent to you. *255 Fear Allah and know that He is fully aware of everything.

It is absolutely improper that a person should revoke the divorce he pronounced on his wife before the lapse of the period of waiting merely in order to use this revocation as a pretext to harass and torment her . God commands that if a person revokes the divorce this decision should be prompted by a sincere desire to live together amicably. Should that intention be lacking, it is better to part company in a graceful manner (see further n. 250 above).
*255). Muslims should not forget that by teaching them the Book and Wisdom, God entrusted them with the glorious task of guiding the world. They should also not forget that they were appointed the 'community, of the middle way' and appointed as witnesses to good and righteousness (see verse 143 above). It does not become them, therefore, to indulge in sophistry and to play with the verses of the Book of God, to exploit the words of the Law to their advantage in achieving ends counter to its spirit, and to slump into injustice and other evil behaviour instead of directing the world to the Right Way.
