Surah Tawbah ayat 127 Tafsir Quran 9:127

﴿وَإِذَا مَا أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ نَّظَرَ بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَىٰ بَعْضٍ هَلْ يَرَاكُم مِّنْ أَحَدٍ ثُمَّ انصَرَفُوا ۚ صَرَفَ اللَّهُ قُلُوبَهُم بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ لَّا يَفْقَهُونَ﴾
[ التوبة: 127]

9:127 And whenever a surah is revealed, they look at each other, [saying], "Does anyone see you?" and then they dismiss themselves. Allah has dismissed their hearts because they are a people who do not understand.

And whenever a sūra is revealed wherein is mention of them and the Prophet s recites it they look at one another desiring to flee and saying ‘Will anyone see you?’ if you get up and flee? and so if no one can see them they get up and leave otherwise they stay put. Then they turn away persisting in their disbelief. God turns their hearts away from guidance because they are a folk who do not understand the truth for they do not reflect on it.

And when a Surah is sent down, they look at one another and express their thoughts in words, thus: Does anyone see you, they ask, and they take their leave. May Allah turn their hearts and thoughts away from the truth and close their hearts ears to admonition; they lack diligence and they are a people who have no comprehension of Allah nor of the spoken discourse of reason narrated by His Messenger

Hypocrites suffer Afflictions Allah says, do not these hypocrites see, أَنَّهُمْ يُفْتَنُونَ ( that they are put in trial ), being tested, فِى كُلِّ عَامٍ مَّرَّةً أَوْ مَرَّتَيْنِ ثُمَّ لاَ يَتُوبُونَ وَلاَ هُمْ يَذَّكَّرُونَ ( once or twice every year Yet, they turn not in repentance, nor do they learn a lesson. ) They neither repent from their previous sins nor learn a lesson for the future.
Mujahid said that hypocrites are tested with drought and hunger.
Allah said; وَإِذَا مَآ أُنزِلَتْ سُورَةٌ نَّظَرَ بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَى بَعْضٍ هَلْ يَرَاكُمْ مِّنْ أَحَدٍ ثُمَّ انصَرَفُواْ صَرَفَ اللَّهُ قُلُوبَهُم بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ لاَّ يَفْقَهُون ( And whenever there comes down a Surah, they look at one another (saying ): "Does any one see you" Then they turn away.
Allah has turned their hearts because they are a people that understand not.) This describes the hypocrites that when a Surah is revealed to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, نَّظَرَ بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَى بَعْضٍ ( they look at one another ), they turn their heads, right and left, saying, هَلْ يَرَاكُمْ مِّنْ أَحَدٍ ثُمَّ انصَرَفُواْ ( "Does any one see you" Then they turn away.
.. ) turning away from, and shunning the truth.
This is the description of hypocrites in this life, for they do not remain where the truth is being declared, neither accepting nor understanding it, just as Allah said in other Ayat, فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ التَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ - كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌ مُّسْتَنفِرَةٌ - فَرَّتْ مِن قَسْوَرَةٍ ( Then what is wrong with them that they turn away from admonition As if they were wild donkeys.
Fleeing from a lion. )74:49-51, and, فَمَالِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ قِبَلَكَ مُهْطِعِينَ - عَنِ الْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ الشِّمَالِ عِزِينَ ( So what is the matter with those who disbelieve that they hasten to hear from you.
(Sitting ) in groups on the right and on the left.)70:36-37.
This Ayah also means, what is the matter with these people who turn away from you to the right and to the left, to escape from truth and revert to falsehood Allah's statement, ثُمَّ انصَرَفُواْ صَرَفَ اللَّهُ قُلُوبَهُم ( Then they turn away.
Allah has turned their hearts (from Truth )) is similar to, فَلَمَّا زَاغُواْ أَزَاغَ اللَّهُ قُلُوبَهُمْ ( So when they turned away, Allah turned their hearts away. ) 61:5.
Allah said next, بِأَنَّهُمْ قَوْمٌ لاَّ يَفْقَهُونَ ( because they are a people that understand not.
) They neither understand Allah's Word nor attempt to comprehend it nor want it.
Rather, they are too busy, turning away from it.
This is why they ended up in this condition. لَقَدْ جَآءَكُمْ رَسُولٌ مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ عَزِيزٌ عَلَيْهِ مَا عَنِتُّمْ حَرِيصٌ عَلَيْكُمْ بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَءُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ

(9:127) When a Surah is sent down, they cast looks at one another, asking, "Is anyone watching you?" Then they silently slip away: *126 Allah has turned away their hearts for they are a people who do not understand. *127

And whenever a surah is revealed, they meaning

*126) This happened when the hypocrites had to attend a meeting that was specially hold for the recital of some new surah.
The Holy Prophet used to recite as an address every new surah before the assembly.
The true believers would listen to it very attentively and respectfully.
But the hypocrites, who had to attend the meeting to show that they were " Muslims', would sit listlessly in the meeting for they had no interest in the recital.
But when they would be assured that their "attendance" had been marked, they would look for an opportune moment to slip away without being seen and noticed.

*127) "Allah has turned away their hearts from the Qur'an, because they do not understand that it is in their own interest to listen to the Qur'an and to act upon its teachings.
These foolish people do not realize that by ignoring the Qur'an and the Holy Prophet, they in fact, deprive themselves of a great blessing.
As they are deeply engaged in their own narrow interests, they do not see that the great knowledge of the Qur'an and the right guidance of the Holy Prophet has the potentiality of making them the leaders of this world, and of bringing salvation to them in the Next World.
As a result of their folly and neglect of the great blessing, Allah has, in accordance with His Law, deprived them of the capacity of making use of this blessing and " turned away their hearts " from it.
That is why these unfortunate, people do not even feel the great loss they are suffering, while the blessed people are taking full advantage of this great fountainhead of power and strength and are preparing themsleves for achieving the greatest success that human beings could ever achieve.

( And whenever a surah is revealed ) whenever Gabriel brings down a surah exposing the fault of the hypocrites and the Prophet ( pbuh ) used to recite to them, ( they ) the hypocrites ( look one at another (as who should say ): Doth anybody) among the sincere believers ( see you? Then they turn away ) from the prayer, the sermon, the Truth and guidance. ( Allah turns away their hearts ) from the Truth and guidance; it is also said: they swerved from the Truth and guidance, and so Allah swerved their hearts from the Truth and guidance ( because they are a folk who understand not ) nor believe in the command of Allah.

And whenever there comes down a Surah (chapter from the Quran), they look at one another (saying): "Does any one see you?" Then they turn away. Allah has turned their hearts (from the light) because they are a people that understand not.
