Quran 25:17 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn
And on the day when He will assemble them yahshuruhum; a variant reading has nahshuruhum ‘We assemble them’ and that which they worship besides God that is other than Him such as the angels Jesus Ezra and the jinn and will say exalted be He fa-yaqūlu; a variant has fa-naqūlu and We shall say’ to those who were worshipped as a way of establishing the argument against the worshippers of the former ‘Was it you read a-antum pronouncing both hamzas or by substituting the second one with an alif or not pronouncing this last and inserting an alif between the one not pronounced and the former or without such an insertion who misled these servants of Mine causing them to fall into error by commanding them to worship you or did they go astray from the way? the path of truth by themselves?
Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim
And in Day of Judgement when He throngs them together with those objects - animate or inanimate- they worshipped, He shall question those gods: Did you mislead these servants of Mine, or did they stray from the prescribed path of their own accord
Quran 25:17 Tafsir Ibn Kathir
The gods of the Idolators will disown Them on the Day of Resurrection
Allah tells us about what will happen on the Day of Resurrection, when those whom the idolators used to worship instead of Allah, angels and others, will rebuke them.
Allah says:
( And on the Day when He will gather them together and that which they worship besides Allah. ) Mujahid said, "This means `Isa, `Uzayr and the angels."
( He will say: "Was it you who misled these My servants..." ) Allah will say to those who were worshipped: `Did you call these people to worship you instead of Me, or was it their own idea to worship you, without any call to that on your part' This is like the Ayah,
( And when Allah will say: "O `Isa, son of Maryam! Did you say unto men: `Worship me and my mother as two gods besides Allah' " He will say: "Glory be to You! It was not for me to say what I had no right (to say ).
Had I said such a thing, You would surely have known it.
You know what is in my innerself though I do not know what is in Yours; truly, You, only You, are the All-Knower of all that is hidden.
Never did I say to them aught except what You did command me to say.") ( 5:116-117 ) Describing how those who were worshipped will respond on the Day of Resurrection, Allah says:
( They will say: "Glorified be You! It was not for us to take (Nattakhidh ) any Awliya' besides You...") Most of the scholars recite a Fathah on the Nun of the word Nattakhidh in His saying:
( "...for us to take (Nattakhidh ) any Awliya' besides You,") meaning, `it is not right for any created being, neither us nor them, to worship anyone except You; we did not call them to do that, but they did it of their own accord, without us telling them to do it or accepting what they did.
We are innocent of them and their worship.' This is like the Ayah,
( And (remember ) the Day when He will gather them all together, then He will say to the angels: "Was it you that these people used to worship" They ( the angels ) will say: "Glorified be You!") ( 34:40-41 ) Other scholars understand this phrase to mean: `it is not proper for us to take anyone except You as protectors or helpers ( Awliya' ), ' meaning, `it is not proper for anyone to worship us, for we are Your servants and in need of You.' This meaning is close to the first.
( but You gave them and their fathers comfort ) means, `You made such a long period of time pass that they forgot the Reminder, i.e., they forgot what had been sent down to them through the Messengers, calling them to worship You alone with no partner or associate.'
( and became a lost people. ) Ibn `Abbas said, "This means, they were destroyed." Al-Hasan Al-Basri and Malik narrated from Az-Zuhri: "There was no good in them." And Allah says:
( Thus they will deny you because of what you say; ) meaning, `those whom you used to worship besides Allah will show you to be liars in your claims that they were your helpers and protectors bringing you closer to Allah.' This is like the Ayat:
( And who is more astray than one who calls on besides Allah, such as will not answer him till the Day of Resurrection, and who are unaware of their calls to them.
And when mankind are gathered, they will become their enemies and will deny their worshipping. ) ( 46:5-6 )
( then you can neither avert nor find help. ) means: they will not be able to avert the punishment from themselves, nor will they be able to help themselves.
( And whoever among you does wrong, ) means by associating others in worship with Allah,
( We shall make him taste a great torment. )
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(25:17) And on that Day (y our Lord will gather :.II these people together as well as their deities, *24 whom they worship besides AIlah. Then He will ask them, "Did you mislead these servants of Mine, or did they themselves go astray?" *25
And [mention] the Day He will gather meaning
*24) Here, deities do not mean idols but the angels, the prophets; the saints, the martyrs and the pious men, whom the mushriks of different communities have made their deities.
*25) Such dialogues between Allah and the gods of the disbelievers occur at several places in the Qur'an.
For instance, in Surah Saba it has been stated: " On the day when He will gather them all together, He will ask the angels, 'Did these people worship you?' They will answer, `Glory be to Thee ! Thou art our Patron and not they: they in fact worshipped the jinns ( that is, satans ); most of these believed in them. " ( vv.
40-41 ).
Similarly in Surah Al-Ma'idah, it is said:" And when AIIah will say "O Jesus, son of Mary, did you ever say to the people: `Make me and my mother gods instead of Allah?' He will answer, `Glory be to Thee ! It did not behove me to say that which I had no right to say...I told them only that which Thou didst bid me: 'Worship Allah, Who is myLord as well as your Lord'." ( vv.
116, 117 ).

( And on the day ) which is the Day of Judgement ( when He will assemble them ) i.e. those who worship idols ( and that which they worship instead of Allah ) of idols ( and will say ) Allah will say to the idols; and it is said: He will say to the angels: ( Was it ye who misled these my slaves ) from My obedience and commanded them to worship you ( or did they (themselves ) wander from the way) and worshipped you out of their own whims?
Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali
And on the Day when He will gather them together and that which they worship besides Allah [idols, angels, pious men, saints, 'Iesa (Jesus) - son of Maryam (Mary), etc.]. He will say: "Was it you who misled these My slaves or did they (themselves) stray from the (Right) Path?"
We try our best to translate, keeping in mind the Italian saying: "Traduttore, traditore", which means: "Translation is a betrayal of the original text".
