Surah Maidah ayat 19 Tafsir Quran 5:19

﴿يَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ قَدْ جَاءَكُمْ رَسُولُنَا يُبَيِّنُ لَكُمْ عَلَىٰ فَتْرَةٍ مِّنَ الرُّسُلِ أَن تَقُولُوا مَا جَاءَنَا مِن بَشِيرٍ وَلَا نَذِيرٍ ۖ فَقَدْ جَاءَكُم بَشِيرٌ وَنَذِيرٌ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ﴾
[ المائدة: 19]

5:19 O People of the Scripture, there has come to you Our Messenger to make clear to you [the religion] after a period [of suspension] of messengers, lest you say, "There came not to us any bringer of good tidings or a warner." But there has come to you a bringer of good tidings and a warner. And Allah is over all things competent.

O People of the Scripture there has verily come to you Our Messenger Muhammad (s) making clear to you the laws of religion after an interval between the messengers for there was no messenger between him and Jesus an interval of 569 years; lest you should say if you are punished ‘There has not come to us any bearer of good tidings min bashīr the min is extra nor any warner’. Indeed there has come to you a bearer of good tidings and a warner and so you shall have no excuse. God has power over all things including punishing you for not following him the Messenger.

O you Ahl AL-Kitab: There came to you Our Prophet after a period of time - about six hundred years- intervening between him and his predecessor, to make intelligible, to you the facts and help you abandon imagination often at war with reason and fact so that you will not claim innocence saying: No one came to us in the capacity of a spectacle and a warning. There he is -the Prophet Muhammad- in your midst, who has been sent to you all as a spectacle and a warning, and Allah is Qadirun to effect all in all

(5:19) People of the Book! After a long interlude during which no Messengers have appeared there has come to you Our Messenger to elucidate the teaching of the true faith lest you say: 'No bearer of glad tidings and no warner has come to us.' For now there indeed has come to you a bearer of glad tidings and a warner, Allah is All-Power-ful. *41

O People of the Scripture, there has meaning

In the present context this sentence is extremely eloquent and subtle.
It signifies that the same God who had sent warners and bearers of glad tidings to men in the past has now sent Muhammad ( peace be on him ) with the same task.
At the same time it also means that they {should not treat the message of this warner and bearer of glad tidings lightly.
They should bear in mind that if they disregard the injunctions of God, He can chastise them as He wills, for He is All-Powerful and All-Mighty.

 

( O people of the Scripture! ) O people of the Torah and the Gospel! ( Now hath Our messenger ) Muhammad ( pbuh ) ( come unto you to make things plain ) that with which you have been commanded and that which you have been prohibited ( after an interval ) of cessation ( of the messengers, lest ye should say ) so that you will not say on the Day of Judgement: ( There came not unto us a messenger of cheer ) announcing Paradise ( nor any warner ) against hell. ( Now hath a messenger ) Muhammad ( pbuh ) ( of cheer ) announcing Paradise ( and a warner ) against hell ( come unto you. Allah is Able to do all things ): whether it be sending messengers, rewarding those who follow the messengers or punishing those who do not follow the messengers.

O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians)! Now has come to you Our Messenger (Muhammad SAW) making (things) clear unto you, after a break in (the series of) Messengers, lest you say: "There came unto us no bringer of glad tidings and no warner." But now has come unto you a bringer of glad tidings and a warner. And Allah is Able to do all things.
