English - Sahih International

14:9 Has there not reached you the news of those before you - the people of Noah and 'Aad and Thamud and those after them? No one knows them but Allah. Their messengers brought them clear proofs, but they returned their hands to their mouths and said, "Indeed, we disbelieve in that with which you have been sent, and indeed we are, about that to which you invite us, in disquieting doubt."

Quran 14:9 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn

Has there not come to you an interrogative meant as an affirmative the tidings the news of those who were before you — the people of Noah and ‘Ād — the people of Hūd — and Thamūd — the people of Sālih — and those after them? None knows them save God. This is on account of their multitude. Their messengers brought them clear signs with lucid arguments demonstrating their truthfulness; but they that is the communities thrust their hands into their mouths to bite on them out of extreme spite and said ‘Lo! we disbelieve in that wherewith you have been sent according to what you claim and lo! we are in grave doubt concerning that to which you call us’ doubt creating great uncertainty.

Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim

Have you people not been informed of what became of your predecessors: the people of Nuh (Noah) and those of Ad and the people of Thamud and their successors whom no one knows but Allah! Their Messengers brought them clear and plain revelations guiding out of darkness and superstitions of later times and out of want of spiritual and intellectual sight into illumination and enlightenment but they drew their hands across their lips to menace with their mouths their refusal to accept the divine message and said: We flatly deny the truth of your mission and we are in doubt of the system of faith which you invite us to follow. It excites suspicion

Quran 14:9 Tafsir Ibn Kathir

Earlier Nations disbelieved in Their Prophets Allah narrated to this Ummah ( followers of Muhammad ) the stories of the people of Prophet Nuh, `Ad and Thamud, and other ancient nations that belied their Messengers.
Only Allah knows the count of these nations, جَآءَتْهُمْ رُسُلُهُم بِالْبَيِّنَـتِ ( To them came their Messengers with clear proofs, ) they brought them evidences and plain, tremendous proofs and signs.
Ibn Ishaq reported that `Amr bin Maymun said that `Abdullah said about Allah's statement, لاَ يَعْلَمُهُمْ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ ( None knows them but Allah. ) "The genealogists utter lies." This is why `Urwah bin Az-Zubayr said, "We did not find anyone who knows the forefathers of Ma`dd bin `Adnan." Meaning of, "They put Their Hands in Their Mouths Allah said next, فَرَدُّواْ أَيْدِيَهُمْ فِى أَفْوَاهِهِمْ ( but they put their hands in their mouths ) It is said that they pointed to the Messengers' mouths asking them to stop calling them to Allah, the Exalted and Most Honored.
It is also said that it means, they placed their hands on their mouths in denial of the Messengers.
It was also said that it means that they did not answer the call of the Messengers, or they were biting their hands in rage.
Mujahid, Muhammad bin Ka`b and Qatadah said that they belied the Messengers and refuted their call with their mouths.
I ( Ibn Kathir ) say that Mujahid's Tafsir is supported by the completion of the narrative, وَقَالُواْ إِنَّا كَفَرْنَا بِمَآ أُرْسِلْتُمْ بِهِ وَإِنَّا لَفِى شَكٍّ مِّمَّا تَدْعُونَنَآ إِلَيْهِ مُرِيبٍ ( and said: "Verily, we disbelieve in that with which you have been sent, and we are really in grave doubt as to that to which you invite us." ) Al-`Awfi reported that Ibn `Abbas said, "When they heard Allah's Word, they were amazed and placed their hands on their mouths," وَقَالُواْ إِنَّا كَفَرْنَا بِمَآ أُرْسِلْتُمْ بِهِ ( and said: "Verily, we disbelieve in that with which you have been sent." ) They said, We do not believe what you brought us, and have strong doubt in its authenticity.

Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi

(14:9) Has *14 not the story reached you of those who have gone before you of the people of Noah and Ad and Thamud, and of those who came after them? Allah alone knows their number. When their Messengers came to them with plain teachings and manifest Signs, they thrust their hands into their mouths, *15 saying, "We reject the Message with which you have been sent and we have a disquieting doubt about that thing *16 to which you are inviting us."

Has there not reached you the news meaning

*14) The speech of Prophet Moses ended with v.
8.
From here begins a direct address to the disbelievers of Makkah.

*15) There has been a great deal of difference of opinion in regard to the meaning of the Arabic words of the Text and different commentators have assigned different meanings to them.
But we arc of the opinion that these express merely the intolerance and perplexity and a bit of anger that was being shown by the disbelievers towards the Message and this is confirmed by the subsequent sentence.

*16) They had a " disquieting doubt " about the Message because it had taken away their peace of mind.
This was because invitation to the Message always makes the minds uneasy, for it becomes hard even for its opponents to reject it out-right or oppose it with peace of mind.
Howsoever they might give vent to their doubts about it and oppose it tooth and nail the force of its truth and its sound arguments, its frankness and candour and its winning manners of exposition produce a great agitation in the minds of its bitterest opponents: then the pure and spotless character of the Messenger and the marked change for the better brought about in his followers produce such an accumulative effect on their minds that even their most bitter antagonists begin to feel uneasy about their own stand.
Thus, those who try to disturb the peace of mind of the upholders of the Truth are themselves deprived of their own peace of mind.

( Has not the history ) the news ( of those before you reached you ) O people of Mecca: ( the folk of Noah. and (the tribes of ) ’Aad and Thamud) i.e. the people of Salih, ( and those after them ) after the folk of Salih, i.e. the people of Shu’ayb and others: how Allah destroyed them when they disbelieved in Him? ( None save Allah knoweth them ) none knows their numbers or their punishment save Allah. ( Their messengers came unto them with clear proofs ) they came to them with commands, prohibitions and signs, ( but they thrust their hands into their mouths ) He says: they rejected what the messengers brought to them; it is also said that this means: they thrust their hands into their mouths, as if saying: be quiet or we will silence you, ( and said ) to the messengers: ( Lo! we disbelieve ) we reject ( in that wherewith ye have been sent ) of Scripture and monotheism, ( and lo! we are in grave doubt ) in manifest doubt ( concerning that to which ye call us ) of Scripture and monotheism.
