﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَتَّخِذُوا الْكَافِرِينَ أَوْلِيَاءَ مِن دُونِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ۚ أَتُرِيدُونَ أَن تَجْعَلُوا لِلَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ سُلْطَانًا مُّبِينًا﴾
[ النساء: 144]

4:144 O you who have believed, do not take the disbelievers as allies instead of the believers. Do you wish to give Allah against yourselves a clear case?

Tafsir Ibn Katheer in English

Abridged Explanation of the Quran

O you who have faith in Allah and follow His Messenger, do not take the disbelievers as your close friends instead of the believers.
By doing so, do you wish to give Allah clear evidence against you, proving that you are deserving of punishment?

Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali

O you who believe! Take not for Auliya' (protectors or helpers or friends) disbelievers instead of believers. Do you wish to offer Allah a manifest proof against yourselves?
