11:77 And when Our messengers, [the angels], came to Lot, he was anguished for them and felt for them great discomfort and said, "This is a trying day."

Abridged Explanation of the Quran

When the angels came to Lot in the form of men he was distressed by their coming to him, and he was upset because he feared for them due to the fact that his people went to men with desire instead of women.
Lot said that it was a terrible day because he thought his people would force themselves on his guests.

Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali

And when Our Messengers came to Lout (Lot), he was grieved on their account and felt himself straitened for them (lest the town people should approach them to commit sodomy with them). He said: "This is a distressful day."

When Our messengers came to Lut, he was grieved on their account and felt himself powerless (to protect) them. He said: "This is a distressful day."

When Our Messengers -disguised as youths- went to Lut, he felt grieved at heart -on account of his expectation- that his perverse people would act sinfully in such a circumstance and he just did not know what to do. Expressing his thoughts in words, he said: This is indeed a distressful day

It also seems that Lot (peace be on him) was unaware that they were angels. He also felt quite disturbed, therefore, at the sight of the visiting young boys. His reaction was natural in view of the known degeneration and unabashed perversity prevalent among his people.
