﴿فَقَالَ إِنِّي أَحْبَبْتُ حُبَّ الْخَيْرِ عَن ذِكْرِ رَبِّي حَتَّىٰ تَوَارَتْ بِالْحِجَابِ﴾

English - Sahih International

38:32 And he said, "Indeed, I gave preference to the love of good [things] over the remembrance of my Lord until the sun disappeared into the curtain [of darkness]."

Abridged Explanation of the Quran

So Solomon said: “I preferred love of wealth, these horses being part of it, over the remembrance of my Lord until the sun set.

Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali

And he said: "Alas! I did love the good (these horses) instead of remembering my Lord (in my 'Asr prayer)" till the time was over, and (the sun) had hidden in the veil (of night).

Faqala innee ahbabtu hubba alkhayri AAan thikri rabbee hatta tawarat bialhijabi

Abdullah Yusuf Ali - Translation

And he said, "Truly do I love the love of good, with a view to the glory of my Lord,"- until (the sun) was hidden in the veil (of night):

Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri

He said: "I did love the good instead of remembering my Lord," till the time was over, and (the sun) had hidden in the veil (of night).

*34) The Arabic word khair in the Text is used for abundance of wealth as well as for horses metaphorically. As the Prophet Solomon had kept these horses for fighting in the way of Allah, he called them "khair".
