Quran 11:28 Surah Hud ayat 28 Tafsir Ibn Katheer in English
11:28 He said, "O my people have you considered: if I should be upon clear evidence from my Lord while He has given me mercy from Himself but it has been made unapparent to you, should we force it upon you while you are averse to it?

Quran 11:28 Tafsir Al-Jalalayn
He said ‘O my people have you considered — inform me — if I am acting upon a clear proof a clear statement from my Lord and He has given me mercy — prophethood — from Him and it has been obscured concealed from you ‘amiyat ‘obscured’ a variant reading has the passive ‘ummiyat can we compel you to it are we able to force you to accept it while you are averse to it? We are not able to do that.
Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim
Nuh said: My people pause here and think, and think but this: What if Allah has enlightened my thoughts and my innermost being and imparted to me knowledge, wisdom and spiritual light and extended to me His mercy to which you are blind on account of lacking intellectual and spiritual light! Shall we, he added, impose on you such spiritual enlightenment when you are prejudiced against it
Quran 11:28 Tafsir Ibn Kathir
The Response of Nuh
Allah says, informing about the response of Nuh to his people,
أَرَأَيْتُمْ إِن كُنتُ عَلَى بَيِّنَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّى
( Tell me, if I have a clear proof from my Lord, ) Bayyinah means certainty, a clear matter, and truthful prophethood.
That is the greatest mercy from Allah upon him ( Nuh ) and them ( his people ).
فَعُمِّيَتْ عَلَيْكُمْ
( but that (mercy ) has been obscured from your sight.) "Obscured from your sight" in this verse means, `it was hidden from you and you are not guided to it.
Thus, you people did not know its importance so you hastily rejected and denied it.'
أَنُلْزِمُكُمُوهَا
( Shall we compel you (to accept ) it) This means, "Should we force you to accept it, while you actually detest it."
Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi
(11:28) Noah said: 'My people! If I base myself on a clear evidence from my Lord, and I have also been blessed by His mercy *34 to which you have been blind, how can we force it upon you despite your aversion to it?
He said, "O my people have you meaning
*34).
This amounts to virtually repeating the statement mentioned earlier ( see verse 17 and n.
17 ff.
above ).
The statement suggested that the Prophet ( peace be on him ) had reached the stage of affirming the unity of God as a result of his own reflection.
Whereafter, God favoured him by designating him a Prophet and providing him with direct knowledge of the truths about which his heart was already convinced.
This also shows that the Prophets attain belief regarding the realm of the Unseen before they are appointed to the office of prophethood.
When they are subsequently designated Prophets, they are endowed with faith in the truths belonging to the realm of the Unseen as a result of direct knowledge of those truths.
Tafsir Maarif-ul-Quran Mufti Muhammad Shafi
The Response of Nuh
Allah says, informing about the response of Nuh to his people,

أَنُلْزِمُكُمُوهَا
( Shall we compel you (to accept ) it) This means, "Should we force you to accept it, while you actually detest it."
Tanwîr al-Miqbâs min Tafsîr Ibn ‘Abbâs
( He said ) Noah said: ( O my people! Bethink you, if I rely ) if I am ( on a clear proof from my Lord ) on a clear exposition which has come down from my Lord ( and there hath come unto me a mercy from His presence ) He favoured me with prophethood and Islam, ( and it hath been made obscure to you ) and my prophethood and Islam have been made obscure to you, ( can we compel you to accept it ) can we inspire it or teach it to you ( when ye are averse thereto ) when you are deniers of it?
Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali
He said: "O my people! Tell me, if I have a clear proof from my Lord, and a Mercy (Prophethood, etc.) has come to me from Him, but that (Mercy) has been obscured from your sight. Shall we compel you to accept it (Islamic Monotheism) when you have a strong hatred for it?
We try our best to translate, keeping in mind the Italian saying: "Traduttore, traditore", which means: "Translation is a betrayal of the original text".
