English - Sahih International

25:42 He almost would have misled us from our gods had we not been steadfast in [worship of] them." But they are going to know, when they see the punishment, who is farthest astray in [his] way.

Tafsir Ibn Katheer in English
Abridged Explanation of the Quran

He almost led us astray from the worship of our gods.
If we had not stood so firmly by their worship, he would have turned us away from it by his arguments and proofs.
They will soon come to know, when they see the punishment in their graves and on the Day of Judgement, who is furthest from the path - is it them or he - and they will come to know which of them is astray.

Muhammad Taqiud-Din alHilali

"He would have nearly misled us from our aliha (gods), had it not been that we were patient and constant in their worship!" And they will know when they see the torment, who it is that is most astray from the (Right) Path!

Almuntakhab Fi Tafsir Alquran Alkarim

He almost succeeded, they add, in influencing our thoughts against our gods and he nearly made us err and our sober wishes almost learned to stray, had it not been for our firmness and constancy. But on the day they are confronted with the torment laid upon the damned they shall then realize who had been lost in the blind mazes of entangled wood

Tafseer Tafheem-ul-Quran by Syed Abu-al-A'la Maududi

(25:42) He had almost led us astray from our gods, had we not remained firm in our faith with regard to them. " *55 The time is not far when they will see the torment and realize who had strayed far from the truth.

He almost would have misled us from our gods had we not meaning

*55) Obviously there is a contradiction between the question posed by the disbelievers and the assertion made by them about their deities. The question was meant to bring the Holy Prophet into contempt, as if to say, "You are making a claim that is far above your low position." On the other hand, their assertion shows that ,they indirectly admitted the force of the arguments and the high character of the Holy Prophet and were even afraid of the effectiveness and success of his Message, because, according to them, it was going to turn them away from their false gods.
