Idgham Mutamathilayn - Merging of Identical Letters

Idgham Mutamathilayn (Merging of Identical Letters)

This section and the two that follow it cover Minor Idgham in its three types: Mutamathilayn, Mutaqaribayn, and Mutajanisayn — the merging of a silent letter with a voweled one, so that they become a single doubled letter of the same kind as the second.

For Idgham Mutamathilayn, Hafs merges every pair of identical letters that meet where the first is silent, such as:

Taa before Taa: ﴾فَمَا رَبِحَت تِّجَارَتُهُمْ﴿ (Al-Baqarah: 16)

Daal before Daal: ﴾وَقَد دَّخَلُٰا بِالْكُفْرِ﴿ (Al-Ma'idah: 61)

Lam before Lam: ﴾قُل لاّ أَشْهَدُ﴿ (Al-An'am: 19)

Baa before Baa: ﴾اذْهَب بَِّكِتَابِي هَذَا﴿ (An-Naml: 28)

Waw (silent, preceded by fatha) before Waw: ﴾حَتَّى عَفَواْ وَّقَالُواْ﴿ (Al-A'raf: 95)

There is no Idgham if the first of the two identical letters is a Madd letter, such as:

Hafs has two valid ways of reciting ﴾مَا أَغْنَى عَنِّي مَالِيَهْ * هَلَكَ عَنِّي سُلطَانِيهْ﴿ (Al-Haqqah: 28–29) when continuing recitation: As-Sakt (a brief pause) with Idhar, or Idgham.
