The Obligatory Connected Madd

The Obligatory Connected Madd (Madd Wajib Muttasil)

Category: The Obligatory Connected Madd is a branching Madd caused by Hamzah.

Definition: it occurs when a Madd letter is followed by a Hamzah within the same word.

Reason for the name "Wajib Muttasil": called "obligatory" (Wajib) because reciters unanimously agree it must be lengthened beyond two counts; called "connected" (Muttasil) because the Madd letter and the Hamzah occur within one connected word.

Its duration: four or five counts for Hafs via Ash-Shatibiyyah, with four counts being the more well-known.

Stopping on a word-final Obligatory Connected Madd: if the Hamzah following the Madd letter is at the very end of a word being stopped on, the Madd letter may be lengthened four, five, or six counts.

Examples:

﴾Wama tafarraqa-lladheena ootu-l-kitaba illa min ba'di ma ja'athumu-l-bayyinah﴿ (Al-Bayyinah: 4)

﴾Dhalika fadlullahi yu'teehi man yasha'﴿ (Al-Jumu'ah: 4) — when stopping on the word-final Hamzah in yasha', the preceding Madd Alif may be lengthened four, five, or six counts.

﴾In yathqafookum yakoonoo lakum a'da' wayabsutoo ilaykum aydiyahum wa'alsinatahum bissoo'i wawaddoo law takfuroon﴿ (Al-Mumtahanah: 2)

﴾Wama yastawi-l-a'ma wal-baseeru walladheena aamanoo wa'amilu-s-salihati wala-l-musee'﴿ (Ghafir: 58) — another example of the word-final Obligatory Connected Madd when stopped on.
