Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Fajr (الفجر): The break of dawn; the moment when the light of day splits through the darkness of night. It refers to the time just before sunrise when the horizon begins to glow with light.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah — the Most High — swears an oath by the dawn. This is a profound and significant oath, for Allah only swears by that which is great and meaningful. The dawn is the moment when darkness is pierced by light, when the night recedes and a new day begins. It is a time of renewal, hope, and mercy, and it is also the time of the Fajr prayer, one of the five daily prayers that mark a Muslim's devotion to his Lord.
The oath by the dawn is a call to reflect on the power and wisdom of Allah, who orchestrates the precise cycle of night and day. Every single morning, without fail, the sun rises and the world awakens — a living sign of Allah's absolute control over the universe. The dawn also reminds us of the resurrection: just as light emerges from darkness, so too will life emerge from death on the Day of Judgment.
This oath invites the believer to ponder: if Allah swears by such a magnificent creation, how great must the truth be that He is affirming? It stirs the heart to wake up at dawn, to witness this divine spectacle, and to stand in prayer before the Creator, seeking His forgiveness and mercy.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, the dawn is not merely a natural phenomenon — it is a divine message. Every morning, Allah gives you a new chance, a fresh start, and an opportunity to draw closer to Him. When you witness the break of dawn, let it remind you of the light of faith that can pierce the darkness of your sins. Let it inspire you to begin your day with the remembrance of Allah, to pray Fajr, and to live a life of purpose and righteousness. The One who brings forth the dawn from the night is the same One who hears your prayers and knows your struggles. Turn to Him, and you will find that His mercy is vaster than the horizon itself.
