Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- فَرِهَانٌ مَّقْبُوضَةٌ (Farihan Maqboodah): Pledges or collateral that are physically handed over and taken into possession by the creditor as a guarantee for the debt.
- ائْتُمِنَ (U'tumina): The one who is entrusted — i.e., the debtor who has been trusted with the debt without requiring a written document or pledge.
- آثِمٌ قَلْبُهُ (Aathimun Qalbuhu): His heart is sinful — meaning the sin originates from the heart, as it is the seat of intention and concealment.
Tafsir (Explanation):
If you are on a journey and cannot find a scribe to document the debt, then the alternative is to provide a tangible pledge — something of value handed over to the creditor — which serves as a security for the debt until it is repaid. This pledge must be physically delivered to the creditor; mere verbal agreement is not sufficient for it to be valid.
However, if you trust one another — meaning the debtor is known for honesty and reliability — then there is no harm in omitting the written document, the witnesses, or the pledge altogether. In that case, the debt becomes an amanah (a trust) upon the debtor, and it is his sacred duty to repay it in full. He must fear Allah, his Lord, and not betray that trust by denying any part of the debt or delaying it without valid reason.
Then the verse turns to address the witnesses: if you have witnessed a transaction and are called upon to testify, do not conceal your testimony. Whoever hides it — out of negligence, fear, or personal gain — then indeed his heart is sinful, because the concealment originates from the heart, and the heart is the seat of faith and intention. Such a person corrupts his own soul and distances himself from Allah's mercy.
And Allah is fully aware of all that you do — whether you fulfill your trusts, repay your debts, or conceal your testimonies. Nothing is hidden from Him, and He will hold you accountable for every action, whether open or secret.
Da'wah Reflection:
This verse beautifully illustrates the comprehensive nature of Islamic teachings — how they balance practical solutions with profound spiritual awareness. Islam does not leave financial transactions to chance; it provides clear mechanisms — writing, witnesses, and pledges — to protect people's rights and prevent disputes. Yet at the same time, it elevates the believer's character by encouraging trust, honesty, and God-consciousness in all dealings.
Notice how the verse links financial integrity with taqwa (God-consciousness) — the debtor is reminded to fear Allah, and the witness is warned that concealing testimony is a sin of the heart. This teaches us that Islam is not merely a religion of rituals; it is a complete way of life that purifies our dealings, our words, and our intentions. When we conduct our business and our relationships with honesty and the awareness that Allah sees everything, we build a society founded on mutual trust and righteousness — a society that earns Allah's blessings and protection.
Let this verse inspire you to be a person of integrity — one who honors trusts, speaks the truth, and fears Allah in all matters, knowing that He is the All-Seeing, the All-Knowing, and that your ultimate success lies in His pleasure.
