The Interpretation:
O you who have truly believed in Allah and His Messenger and submitted to His command! Do not violate the sanctity of Allah’s sacred rites and symbols. Honor the rituals of Hajj and ‘Umrah, and do not treat them lightly or alter them. Do not deem lawful fighting during the sacred months—Dhul-Qi‘dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Al-Muharram, and Rajab—for these are times of peace and security. Do not seize or interfere with the sacrificial animals (al-hady) that are brought to the Sacred House, nor the animals marked with collars (al-qalā’id) that signal their purpose as offerings. And do not harm or fight those who are journeying to the Sacred House, whether they come for trade and provision or to seek the pleasure of their Lord—leave them in peace and let them reach their destination safely.
When you have completed your pilgrimage or ‘Umrah and have come out of the state of Ihrām, then hunting becomes permissible for you—so enjoy what Allah has made lawful for you.
And let not your hatred for a people who once prevented you from reaching the Sacred Mosque—as happened in the year of Hudaybiyyah—drive you to commit injustice or transgression against them. Do not let anger or revenge push you to exceed the bounds of fairness. Rather, remain just and uphold equity, for justice is closer to righteousness.
Cooperate with one another, O believers, in all that is good and righteous, and in God-consciousness—helping each other to obey Allah and avoid His prohibitions. And do not cooperate in sin, transgression, or injustice against others. Do not aid one another in what angers Allah or harms His creation.
And fear Allah in all your affairs, for He is severe in punishment. He sees all that you do, and His retribution is mighty against those who defy His commands and transgress His limits. So be mindful of Him, and let your actions be guided by His pleasure, for His mercy is vast for those who obey Him, and His punishment is severe for those who turn away.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
This noble verse is a profound lesson in the beauty of Islam—a religion that commands respect for sacred symbols, protection of life and property, justice even toward enemies, and mutual cooperation in goodness. Imagine the mercy and wisdom in these words: Allah forbids His believers from harming even those who once opposed them, urging them to rise above hatred and embrace justice. This is the character of true faith—a faith that builds societies on love, compassion, and righteousness.
Let this verse inspire you to examine your own life: Are you cooperating with others in good deeds? Are you guarding your tongue and actions from sin and transgression? Are you treating even those who have wronged you with fairness? The path to Allah’s pleasure is paved with patience, justice, and mutual support in righteousness. Embrace it, and you will find peace in this life and success in the Hereafter. And know that Allah’s punishment is severe—so never take His commands lightly, and always strive to be among those who fear Him and do good.
