Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ṭā-Sīn-Mīm (طسم): These are disjointed letters (ḥurūf muqaṭṭaʿah) from the Arabic alphabet. They are among the miraculous aspects of the Qur'an, and their precise meaning is known only to Allah. They serve as a challenge to the Arabs, who were masters of eloquence, that this Qur'an is composed of the very letters they use in their speech—yet they cannot produce anything like it.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse opens Surah Ash-Shuʿarāʾ with the disjointed letters "Ṭā-Sīn-Mīm." As with similar openings in other surahs, these letters draw the listener's attention to the miracle of the Qur'an. They remind us that the Qur'an is built from the same Arabic letters that the people of Makkah used daily in their poetry and oratory, yet no human being has ever been able—or will ever be able—to match its eloquence, depth, and truth. This is a divine challenge that stands forever, proving that the Qur'an is the uncreated word of Allah, revealed to His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The mention of these letters also prepares the heart to receive the profound verses that follow, urging the reader to reflect deeply on the message of the Qur'an.
A Daʿwah Reflection for the Reader:
Dear reader, when you encounter these mysterious letters at the start of a surah, pause and reflect: the Creator of the heavens and the earth chose to begin His speech with sounds that echo in your ears—letters you know and use. Yet, the words that follow are beyond human capacity. This is an invitation to you to open your heart to the Qur'an, to read it with contemplation, and to realise that it is a living miracle sent as a mercy to all of humanity. Let these letters be a reminder that the One who speaks to you through this Book knows you better than you know yourself, and His guidance is the path to true success in this life and the next. Embrace this divine call, and you will find peace that no worldly pursuit can offer.
