Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- An-Naba' (النَّبَإِ): The news, tidings, or announcement of great significance.
- Al-'Azim (الْعَظِيمِ): The tremendous, mighty, or momentous.
Explanation of the Verse:
After mentioning that the disbelievers are asking one another, Allah clarifies what exactly they are asking about: they are inquiring about the tremendous news — the news of the Resurrection and the Day of Judgment. This is the news that the Qur'an has brought, which proclaims that Allah will raise the dead from their graves and hold all of humanity accountable for their deeds. This news is described as "tremendous" because of its immense gravity and far-reaching consequences: it is the event that will determine the eternal destiny of every soul — either everlasting bliss in Paradise or eternal punishment in Hellfire.
The disbelievers of Quraysh would ask each other about this news in a tone of mockery and denial, unable to comprehend or accept that such a day could ever come. Yet the Qur'an affirms that this news is not only true but is the most important reality that humanity must confront. It is the message that calls people to reflect on their purpose, to turn back to their Creator, and to prepare for the meeting with Him.
Reflection and Call:
Dear reader, pause and ponder: what is the greatest news you have ever heard? Is it not the news that your life has meaning, that your deeds are not lost, and that there is a Day when justice will be perfectly established — where every wrong will be righted and every good will be rewarded? This is the news of the Qur'an, the news of the Resurrection. It is a call to awaken your heart from the slumber of heedlessness, to realize that this worldly life is but a fleeting moment, and that the true, everlasting life awaits you. Embrace this news with certainty, let it transform your actions, and let it fill your heart with hope in Allah's mercy and awe of His justice. For indeed, those who believe in this tremendous news and live accordingly will find, on that Day, that their joy is as tremendous as the news itself — eternal bliss in the presence of their Lord.
