Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-'Asifat (العَاصِفَات): The violent, raging winds that blow with great force and intensity.
- 'Asfan (عَصْفًا): A severe, destructive blowing — referring to the winds' powerful and tumultuous movement.
Tafsir (Explanation):
In this verse, Allah Almighty swears an oath by the violent, raging winds that blow with overwhelming force and destructive power. These winds are a manifestation of Allah's absolute control over the natural world — they come and go by His command, sometimes bringing mercy (as carriers of rain-laden clouds) and sometimes bringing trial (as destructive storms). The oath here draws our attention to the magnificent power of the Creator, who harnesses these forces with perfect wisdom.
The verse is part of a series of oaths in Surah Al-Mursalat, where Allah swears by various phenomena — the winds, the angels, and the divine revelations — to affirm the certainty of the Day of Judgment. By swearing by these powerful natural forces, Allah emphasizes that just as the winds are real and their effects are undeniable, so too is the coming of the Hour and the resurrection. No one can escape the reality of what Allah has promised.
Reflection and Da'wah:
This verse invites us to look at the world around us with eyes of faith. When you see the wind howling and trees bending before its force, remember that the same Allah who commands the wind is the One who has promised you a day of reckoning. The wind is a living sign of Allah's power — it cannot be seen, yet its effects are unmistakable. Likewise, the Day of Judgment is unseen, but its coming is certain. Let this verse strengthen your conviction and inspire you to prepare for that Day with sincere repentance, good deeds, and unwavering trust in Allah's justice and mercy. The same wind that can destroy can also carry clouds of mercy — so too, Allah's wrath is for the disbelievers, while His mercy embraces the believers who turn to Him.
