Word Meanings:

  • Al-Mursalat (الْمُرْسَلَاتِ): The sent ones — referring to that which is sent forth, whether angels or winds, as explained by the commentators.
  • Urfan (عُرْفًا): Literally meaning "in succession" or "following one after another," like the mane of a horse (the hair of which overlaps in sequence). It also carries the meaning of "that which is known as good" (ma'ruf), indicating a continuous, orderly flow.

Explanation of the Verse:

Allah, the Exalted, opens this chapter with a solemn oath, swearing by the winds that are sent forth in rapid succession, one after another, like the flowing mane of a horse — continuous, relentless, and orderly. These are the gentle breezes that carry rain and nourishment, and they are also described by many scholars as the angels sent with goodness and divine commands, fulfilling their duties without pause or hesitation.

This oath serves as a powerful reminder of the precision and majesty of Allah's creation. The winds that blow across the earth — sometimes gentle, sometimes fierce — are not random or chaotic; they follow a divine order, serving the purposes of their Creator. Likewise, the angels are sent with revelation, guidance, and mercy, moving ceaselessly between the heavens and the earth to execute Allah's will.

By swearing by these magnificent creations, Allah draws our attention to the certainty of what follows in the rest of the chapter: the Day of Judgment is real, and it will undoubtedly come to pass. Just as the winds and angels are sent forth without fail, so too will the promised Hour arrive — no one can prevent it, and no one can delay it.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Beloved reader, pause for a moment and consider the world around you. Have you ever stood in a field and felt the breeze upon your face, watching as clouds gather and rain falls upon thirsty land? That gentle wind is not an accident — it is a sign from your Lord, a messenger of His mercy, moving at His command. If Allah can send these winds with such precision and purpose, how can you doubt His promise of resurrection and accountability?

Let this verse awaken in your heart a sense of awe and gratitude. The same Lord who orchestrates the winds and commands the angels is the Lord who watches over you, hears your prayers, and has prepared for His believing servants a reward beyond imagination. Do not let the distractions of this world make you forget the certainty of the Hereafter. Turn to your Creator with sincerity, and let His signs — from the gentle breeze to the mighty storm — remind you of His power and His love for those who believe.
