Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse is a powerful, decisive declaration from Allah and His Messenger, delivered publicly to all people on the great day of Hajj — the Day of Sacrifice. It announces, in no uncertain terms, that Allah and His Messenger are completely disassociated from the polytheists who broke their covenants and persisted in shirk (associating partners with Allah). This is not merely a political decree; it is a divine statement of ultimate truth: falsehood has no standing before Allah, and those who cling to it sever themselves from His mercy and protection.
The verse then turns directly to the polytheists with an open door of mercy: "If you repent — if you abandon your shirk and return to the pure worship of Allah alone — then that repentance is better for you." This is the beauty of Islam: even after the severest warning, the door of tawbah (repentance) remains wide open. Allah does not delight in punishing; He delights in the return of His servants. The very same breath that declares disassociation also invites to reconciliation with the Creator.
But for those who turn away, who reject the truth after it has been made crystal clear, the verse delivers a firm warning: "Know that you can never escape Allah." No power, no wealth, no alliance, no fortress can protect a soul from the will of its Creator. The One who created you from nothing has absolute control over your existence — you cannot outrun His justice, nor can you frustrate His decree.
Finally, the verse concludes with a striking rhetorical twist: "And give glad tidings to those who disbelieve — of a painful punishment." The word "glad tidings" is used ironically, to emphasize the certainty of what awaits them. It is a chilling reminder that the consequences of rejecting the truth are not vague or uncertain; they are as certain as the good news promised to the believers. The painful punishment in the Hereafter is a reality that no denial can erase.
Da‘wah Reflection:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on the profound mercy embedded in this verse. Even in the midst of a declaration of disassociation, Allah immediately offers the path of repentance — because He loves for His servants to return to Him. This is the essence of Islam: a religion that balances justice with boundless mercy, that never closes the door of hope, and that calls every soul — no matter how far it has strayed — back to the peace of submission to its Lord. The warning is real, but so is the invitation. Choose the path that leads to eternal success: repent, return, and taste the sweetness of faith. For Allah is the Most Merciful, and His door is open until the very last moment of your life.
