The Tafsir (Explanation):
This noble verse comes as a divine exception to the preceding ruling concerning the polytheists who had broken their treaties. Allah, in His infinite mercy and justice, makes clear that not all polytheists are to be treated the same. Those who have remained faithful to their covenants with you, O believers, are to be honoured for their loyalty.
The verse specifically refers to those with whom you have entered into a treaty, and who have then upheld their side of the agreement with complete integrity. They have not betrayed you, nor have they reduced or violated any of the terms of the pact. Furthermore, they have not lent their support or assistance to any of your enemies against you. They have remained neutral and true, even when it might have been tempting to side with those who opposed you.
For such people, Allah commands you to complete their treaty to its full, agreed-upon term. Do not shorten it, do not break it, and do not treat them as you would treat the treacherous ones. Their honesty and steadfastness deserve your reciprocal honesty and steadfastness. This is a profound teaching: that in Islam, a promise is a sacred bond, and loyalty is to be met with loyalty, regardless of the other party's faith.
The verse concludes with a beautiful and motivating divine statement: "Indeed, Allah loves the Muttaqīn" — those who are truly conscious of Him. This is a powerful incentive, reminding us that fulfilling our promises and maintaining our integrity in all dealings is not merely a social or political matter; it is an act of piety and righteousness that draws us closer to Allah's love. The one who fears Allah and is mindful of Him in all their affairs will never betray a trust, and will always honour their word. This is the hallmark of true faith, and it is a quality that Allah Himself loves and rewards.
So, let this verse be a shining example of Islamic ethics: a religion that commands justice, honours treaties, and loves those who are faithful and God-conscious. It is a call to be people of our word, to be trustworthy in all our dealings, and to know that Allah is always watching and loves those who uphold righteousness.
