- Arba‘ati Ashhur (أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ): Four months — a specified, limited period of time.
- Ghayru Mu‘jizi Allah (غَيْرُ مُعْجِزِي اللَّهِ): Not able to escape Allah or frustrate His will; incapable of fleeing His power.

Explanation of the Verse:
In this profound verse, Allah addresses the polytheists who had broken their treaties and betrayed the Muslim community. After the declaration of disavowal from them, Allah grants them a temporary reprieve: *"Travel freely through the land for four months."* This was not a sign of weakness, but a merciful period of grace — a final opportunity to reflect, reconsider, and mend their ways. During these four months, they were safe from attack by the believers, able to move about the land as they wished. This period began from the Day of the Greater Pilgrimage (Yawm al-Hajj al-Akbar).
However, this safety was strictly limited. The verse continues with a stern warning: *"And know that you cannot escape Allah."* No matter where they go, no matter how far they flee, they can never outrun the power and justice of Allah. They may think they have evaded punishment, but Allah’s knowledge encompasses everything, and His decree is inevitable.
The verse concludes with a decisive truth: *"And that Allah will disgrace the disbelievers."* This humiliation is twofold — in this world, through defeat, capture, and loss of honor; and in the Hereafter, through the eternal punishment of Hellfire. The disbelievers who persist in their arrogance and enmity against the truth will taste disgrace in both realms.
This verse applies to three categories of treaty-breakers: those whose treaties were unrestricted and without a fixed term (their term was set to four months), those whose treaties were less than four months (their term was extended to complete four months), and those who had broken their covenants (they were given the same four-month grace period). As for those who had a fixed-term treaty, even if it exceeded four months, their treaty was honored until its natural conclusion, as mentioned in the following verses.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, see how Allah, in His infinite mercy, even grants respite to those who oppose Him. He does not hasten punishment; He gives time — time to think, time to return, time to seek forgiveness. This is the beauty of Islam: a religion of justice tempered with mercy. If the polytheists had used this four-month window to embrace the truth, they would have found peace, honor, and salvation. Instead, many persisted in their ways and faced the consequences.
For us today, this verse carries a timeless lesson: never be deceived by the delay of punishment. Allah’s promise is true, and His justice is certain. But equally, His mercy is vast — the door of repentance remains open until the very last moment. Do not let pride or stubbornness keep you from the truth. Return to your Lord before the appointed time passes, and you will find Him Forgiving and Merciful. The disbelievers’ end is disgrace, but the believers’ end is eternal honor in the gardens of Paradise. Choose wisely, for the choice is yours.
