📖 English Meaning
It is He who has sent down to you, [O Muhammad], the Book; in it are verses [that are] precise - they are the foundation of the Book - and others unspecific. As for those in whose hearts is deviation [from truth], they will follow that of it which is unspecific, seeking discord and seeking an interpretation [suitable to them]. And no one knows its [true] interpretation except Allah. But those firm in knowledge say, "We believe in it. All [of it] is from our Lord." And no one will be reminded except those of understanding.

Meanings of Key Words:

  • Muhkamat (محكمات): Verses that are precise, clear, and firmly established in their meaning, leaving no room for ambiguity or misinterpretation.
  • Umm al-Kitab (أم الكتاب): The foundation or core of the Book; the principal verses to which all others are referred.
  • Mutashabihat (متشابهات): Verses that are ambiguous or allegorical, bearing multiple possible meanings and requiring careful interpretation in light of the clear verses.
  • Zaygh (زيغ): Deviation or perversion—a moral and spiritual inclination away from the truth.
  • Fitan (فتنة): Here, it means seeking to create discord, doubt, and misguidance among people.
  • Ta'wil (تأويل): The final interpretation or ultimate reality of a matter; for those with deviant hearts, it means twisting the meaning to suit their desires.
  • Rasikhun fi al-'ilm (الراسخون في العلم): Those firmly grounded and deeply rooted in knowledge, possessing both understanding and humility.
  • Ulu al-albab (أولو الألباب): People of sound intellect and pure understanding, who reflect and draw lessons.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse is a magnificent declaration of the nature of the Qur'an and a guiding light for every believer on how to approach it. Allah, the Most High, reveals that He alone is the One who sent down the Book to His Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him). Within this glorious Book, there are two categories of verses:

First, there are the Muhkamat—the clear, decisive, and unambiguous verses. These are the foundation of the Book, the mother verses to which all else returns. They contain the core teachings of faith, worship, morals, and law. When any matter becomes unclear, the believer refers back to these firm verses, and whatever agrees with them is accepted, while whatever contradicts them is rejected.

Second, there are the Mutashabihat—verses that are allegorical or open to multiple interpretations, whose precise meaning may not be immediately apparent to every reader. These verses are a test from Allah, distinguishing those who seek truth from those who seek mischief.

Now comes the critical warning: those whose hearts harbor deviation (zaygh)—a sickness of faith and a stubborn inclination away from the truth—they deliberately chase after these ambiguous verses, isolating them from their clear counterparts. Their goal is not understanding but discord (fitnah): they wish to cast doubt into the hearts of the believers, to confuse and mislead. And they seek to impose their own twisted interpretations (ta'wil) upon these verses, forcing them to conform to their false doctrines and desires.

Then Allah clarifies the ultimate reality: No one knows the true, final interpretation of these verses except Allah alone. The full, definitive reality of the mutashabihat is known only to Him. As for those who are firmly rooted in knowledge (al-rasikhun fi al-'ilm), they do not arrogantly claim to know everything. Instead, with humility and sincerity, they declare: "We believe in it—all of it—the clear and the ambiguous alike, for every part of it is from our Lord." They do not let what they do not fully grasp shake their faith in what they do understand. They submit, they trust, and they refer the ambiguous back to the clear.

And who truly benefits from this guidance and takes heed? Only people of sound intellect (ulu al-albab)—those whose minds are pure, whose hearts are sincere, and who reflect deeply upon the Qur'an with the intention of drawing closer to their Creator.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, this verse is a profound mercy from Allah. It teaches us how to approach His Book with wisdom and humility. The Qur'an is not a puzzle to be solved by the arrogant, nor a battlefield for those who wish to spread doubt. It is a light for those who seek guidance, a healing for those who seek truth.

When you encounter a verse whose meaning seems unclear, do not let your heart waver. Instead, anchor yourself in the clear verses, seek knowledge from those who are firmly grounded in it, and say with confidence: "We believe in it; all of it is from our Lord." This is the mark of true faith—not knowing everything, but trusting the One who knows all.

And know that the Qur'an was revealed as a mercy to humanity, to guide you out of darkness and into light. Approach it with a pure heart, a sincere intention, and a sound intellect, and you will find in it the answers your soul yearns for. Allah has made this Book easy for those who seek Him sincerely. So open your heart to it, reflect upon its verses, and let it transform your life. Indeed, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.

[Who say], "Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower.
9رَبَّنَا إِنَّكَ جَامِعُ النَّاسِ لِيَوْمٍ لَّا رَيْبَ فِيهِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُخْلِفُ الْمِيعَادَ
Our Lord, surely You will gather the people for a Day about which there is no doubt. Indeed, Allah does not fail in His promise."
