Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Phrases:
- Yuṣawwirukum (يُصَوِّرُكُمْ): He forms, shapes, and fashions you — giving each of you your unique physical and spiritual characteristics.
- Al-Arḥām (الْأَرْحَامِ): The wombs (the uteri of mothers), the place of gestation and development.
- Kayfa yashā’ (كَيْفَ يَشَاءُ): In whatever manner and form He wills — without any external constraint or limitation.
- Al-‘Azīz (الْعَزِيزُ): The Almighty, the All-Powerful — the One whose will cannot be opposed or overcome.
- Al-Ḥakīm (الْحَكِيمُ): The All-Wise — the One whose actions, commands, and creations are all perfectly measured and purposeful.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse directs our hearts and minds to one of the greatest, yet most overlooked, signs of Allah’s absolute power and perfect wisdom: the creation of the human being in the womb of its mother. Allah — and He alone — is the One who shapes you inside the wombs in whatever form He wills. He decides whether you will be male or female, beautiful or otherwise, white or black, and He determines the traits, capacities, and even the ultimate outcomes of happiness or hardship in this life and the Hereafter. No physician, no scientist, no human power has any say in this process. It is purely His command and His design.
This verse was revealed as a decisive response to the delegation of Christians from Najran who claimed that Jesus (peace be upon him) was the son of God, or even God Himself. The argument is profound and simple: anyone who was formed in a womb, who passed through the stages of fetal development, and who was born as a helpless infant — such a being cannot possibly be divine, nor can he be the offspring of the Divine. The very fact that Jesus was created in the womb of Maryam (peace be upon her) is itself a proof of his complete humanity and of Allah’s absolute sovereignty over all creation.
Then the verse concludes with the ultimate declaration of faith: “There is no god worthy of worship except Him, the Almighty, the All-Wise.” This is not merely a statement of belief — it is a call to action. Because He alone is the Creator and the Shaper of all things, He alone deserves your worship, your love, your obedience, and your gratitude. His might means that nothing can stand against His will, and His wisdom means that everything He does — from the formation of a single cell in the womb to the running of the entire universe — is done with perfect justice and purpose.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
Dear reader, pause for a moment and reflect on the miracle that is you. Before you were born, you were a tiny, invisible speck — yet Allah, in His infinite mercy and power, shaped you, gave you your features, your gender, your abilities, and your soul. He did not need you, but He created you out of His love and wisdom. If the same Allah who formed you in the darkness of the womb can bring you into this world with such perfection, then surely He is worthy of your complete trust and devotion. He is the One who knows what is best for you, and His guidance — the Qur’an and the Sunnah — is the manual for your life, just as He designed you. So turn to Him, submit to Him, and you will find peace, purpose, and success in this life and the next.
