Explanation of the Verse:
This verse is the heartfelt supplication of the deeply rooted scholars and believers — those whose faith is firm and whose knowledge is sound. They turn to their Lord with humility and awareness of their own weakness, saying: *“Our Lord, do not cause our hearts to deviate after You have guided us.”*
They recognize that guidance is a gift from Allah alone, and that the heart is in His Hands — He turns it as He wills. So they plead with Him to keep their hearts steadfast upon the truth, to protect them from slipping into misguidance, doubt, or inclination toward falsehood after they have already tasted the sweetness of faith and certainty.
Then they add: *“And grant us from Your presence mercy.”* They do not ask for a specific, limited mercy, but rather a comprehensive mercy that encompasses them — mercy that strengthens their hearts, forgives their shortcomings, protects them from trials, and helps them remain firm until the end. They ask it *from His presence* (min ladunka), meaning from His special, unearned bounty — not because they deserve it, but because His generosity is boundless.
They conclude with the beautiful acknowledgment: *“Indeed, You are the Bestower.”* They affirm that Allah is al-Wahhāb — the One Who gives abundantly, repeatedly, and freely, without any expectation of return. This name of Allah instills hope in the believer’s heart, for it reminds us that no matter how weak we are, our Lord’s giving is endless.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, this verse teaches us a profound lesson: even the most knowledgeable and righteous people never feel self-sufficient in their faith. They constantly fear the turning of their hearts and continuously seek Allah’s protection. This is the essence of humility before Allah — knowing that we are always in need of His guidance, every single moment.
So let this be your daily supplication. Make it a habit to say: *“Our Lord, do not cause our hearts to deviate after You have guided us, and grant us from Your presence mercy; indeed, You are the Bestower.”* Let it be a shield for your heart against the whispers of doubt, the temptations of this world, and the trials that may shake your faith.
And know that Allah — the Most Generous — loves to be asked. He has promised to respond to those who call upon Him. So ask Him with certainty, for He is al-Wahhāb, the One Who never tires of giving, and His mercy is greater than your sins, your weaknesses, and your fears. Hold on to Him, and He will never let you go.
