Tafsir (Explanation):
This blessed verse reveals the great mercy of Allah, which He has written for those who follow His final Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him) — the unlettered Prophet who could neither read nor write, and whose knowledge came purely from divine revelation. This very characteristic is among the proofs of his truthfulness, for how could an unlettered man from an unlettered nation bring forth a Book that has challenged the greatest minds of humanity for over fourteen centuries?
The verse tells us that the People of the Scripture found his description, his name, and his mission written clearly in their own books — the Torah and the Gospel. Their scholars knew him as they knew their own children, yet many of them concealed this truth out of envy and worldly desire.
What are the qualities of this blessed Messenger? He is described here as one who:
- Commands what is good — calling people to pure monotheism, sincere worship, justice, kindness, and every virtue that elevates the soul.
- Forbids what is evil — warning against polytheism, oppression, immorality, and every vice that corrupts the heart and society.
- Makes lawful the pure things — allowing the wholesome pleasures of life that bring benefit and happiness, such as good food, lawful marriage, and honest trade.
- Forbids the impure things — prohibiting what harms the body, mind, and soul, such as intoxicants, pork, and all forms of corruption.
- Removes heavy burdens — lifting the harsh restrictions that were placed upon previous nations as a test of their obedience, such as the mandatory death penalty for both intentional and accidental killing, the cutting of the soiled part of garments, and other severe obligations.
This is the mercy of Islam — a religion of ease and balance, not of hardship and extremism. Allah says elsewhere: "Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship" (2:185).
Then comes the glorious promise: "Those who believe in him, honor him, support him, and follow the light sent down with him — it is they who will be successful."
This is the path to true success — the success of this life and the Hereafter. It is not merely a matter of claiming faith, but of:
- Believing in the Prophet with certainty of heart.
- Honoring and revering him, following his example in word and deed.
- Supporting him — defending his message and spreading his call with wisdom and beautiful preaching.
- Following the light — the Qur'an — which illuminates the darkness of ignorance and guides humanity to the straight path.
Dear reader, this verse is an open invitation to you. The Prophet (peace be upon him) is not a distant historical figure — he is the mercy sent to all of humanity. His message is preserved, his character is documented, and his teachings have transformed billions of lives across centuries. The burdens that weighed down previous nations have been lifted by Allah's grace through him. The door of success is open before you — will you not enter through it?
The Qur'an is that light which never dims. It guides to the best of words and the best of deeds. Whoever holds firmly to it and follows the Messenger will find success in this life and eternal bliss in the Hereafter. May Allah make us among those who believe in him, honor him, support him, and follow his light — for truly, they are the successful ones.
