Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Al-Ummī (الأُمِّيّ): The unlettered one — referring to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) who did not read or write, as a sign that his knowledge came purely from divine revelation.
- Kalimātihi (كَلِمَاتِهِ): His Words — meaning the revealed scriptures and divine messages sent down to all prophets, including the Qur'an and previous books.
- Yuhyī wa Yumīt (يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ): He gives life and causes death — signifying Allah's absolute power over creation, existence, and resurrection.
The Tafsir (Interpretation):
O noble reader, imagine the moment when the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stood before humanity with a message that would change the course of history. Allah commands him to declare openly: "Say, O mankind!" — not to a specific tribe, nation, or generation, but to all people — Arabs and non-Arabs, the learned and the simple, those of his time and those who would come after until the end of days. This is the universality of Islam: a message of mercy and guidance for every soul on earth.
The Prophet is sent by the One whose dominion encompasses the heavens and the earth — every galaxy, every star, every creature hidden in the depths of the seas, and every secret within the hearts of humans. This is the King of all kings, the Owner of all that exists. And because He alone is the Creator and Sustainer, there is no deity worthy of worship except Him. No idol, no human, no force of nature deserves your devotion — only the One who holds life and death in His hands. He brings the dead to life, and He takes life away from the living, and He will resurrect all for the final account.
So what does Allah ask of you? The verse answers with a beautiful, simple call: "Believe in Allah and His Messenger, the unlettered Prophet." This Prophet — who could neither read nor write — came with a Book that challenges the greatest minds of every era. His illiteracy is not a weakness; it is a miracle. It proves that the Qur'an he conveyed is not his own composition, but the very Word of Allah. He himself believes in Allah and in all His Words — the revelations sent to him and to the prophets before him, from Adam to Jesus (peace be upon them all). He makes no distinction between the messengers; he honors them all as brothers in one divine mission.
And then comes the command that opens the door to all goodness: "Follow him, so that you may be guided." Following the Prophet (peace be upon him) is not merely an act of intellectual agreement — it is a way of life. It means walking in his footsteps, embodying his character, and submitting to what he commanded and abstaining from what he forbade. When you follow him, you are not following a mere man; you are following the path that leads to Allah's pleasure and to the straight road that ends in eternal bliss.
Dear reader, this verse is an open invitation to you, personally. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was sent for you, and the door of guidance remains open. Do not let the distractions of this world close your heart to this call. The One who owns the heavens and the earth is calling you to Him — to believe, to follow, and to be guided. What could be more precious than that? Embrace this message with a sincere heart, and you will find peace in this life and salvation in the next.
