Tafsir (Explanation):
O believers, Allah reveals to His Prophet ﷺ the hidden reality of those around him. Among the Bedouin Arabs dwelling in the deserts surrounding Madinah, and among the people of Madinah itself, there are hypocrites who have become utterly entrenched in hypocrisy. They have polished and perfected their deceit to such a degree that their true condition remains concealed even from you, O Messenger of Allah. Their outward appearance shows faith, their tongues utter Islamic words, and they mix with the believers — yet their hearts are filled with rancor and disbelief.
But Allah, the All-Knowing, sees through every veil. He says: "We know them." Nothing escapes His knowledge — not their secret meetings, not their hidden plots, not the malice they harbor in their chests. This is a profound comfort for the believers: you may be deceived by people, but Allah is never deceived. He knows every hypocrite by name and by nature.
Allah then declares His justice: "We will punish them twice." The first punishment comes in this worldly life — their hypocrisy will be exposed, they will face humiliation, and they will taste defeat through being killed or taken captive, as occurred in the campaigns against the hypocrites and their allies. The second punishment is the torment of the grave after death, where their souls will taste anguish before the final reckoning. Then, on the Day of Resurrection, they will be returned to the "great punishment" — the eternal, blazing fire of Hell, the lowest depth of which is their abode. That is the ultimate justice for those who waged hidden war against Allah and His Messenger.
A Call to Reflection and Sincerity:
This verse carries a timeless lesson for every Muslim. It teaches us that faith is not a matter of outward appearance — it is a matter of the heart that Allah alone fully knows. The hypocrites of Madinah prayed with the Muslims, fasted with them, and lived among them, yet their end was disgrace in this world and eternal torment in the Hereafter. How then can anyone rely on mere external rituals while their heart is filled with insincerity?
Dear believer, let this verse be a mirror for your own soul. Purify your intentions, for Allah sees what is hidden. Do not be like those who show devotion in public but harbor doubt or malice in private. Allah's knowledge is perfect, and His justice is absolute. The Prophet ﷺ himself did not know the hypocrites of his time — yet Allah knew them and exposed them. So be certain that no secret deed, no hidden thought, and no concealed hypocrisy will ever escape Allah's sight.
And what a beautiful promise lies in sincerity! If the hypocrites earned double punishment for their double-facedness, then the sincere believers earn double reward for their steadfastness. Allah says: "Those who say, 'Our Lord is Allah,' and then remain firm — the angels descend upon them, saying: 'Fear not, nor grieve, and receive good tidings of Paradise which you were promised.'" (Fussilat 41:30). So hold firm to sincerity, for Allah is with the truthful, and He will never abandon those who are honest with Him in their hearts.
