Tafsir (Explanation):
Allah, the Most High, declares a profound and universal truth: He sent a messenger to every single nation that existed before you, O people. This was not a random act, but a deliberate and merciful pattern of divine guidance. The core message of every prophet, from the first to the last, was one and the same: "Worship Allah alone, and stay far away from the Taghut."
This means that all creation was commanded to devote their worship, submission, and obedience solely to Allah — the Creator, the Sustainer, the Only One worthy of devotion. And equally, they were commanded to abandon and avoid everything worshipped besides Him, whether it be idols of stone, deceased saints, celestial bodies, or any false authority that legislates against Allah's law. This is the essence of the testimony of faith — *La ilaha illa Allah* — and it has been the unchanging call of all prophets throughout history.
Then Allah explains the divine reality of human choice: "Among them were those whom Allah guided, and among them were those upon whom misguidance was justly decreed." This does not mean Allah forces anyone into error. Rather, it reflects His perfect justice: those who sincerely sought the truth and responded to their innate nature (*fitrah*) were blessed with divine guidance and the ability to follow their messengers. As for those who stubbornly rejected the truth, turned away in arrogance, and persisted in disbelief, misguidance became their deserved destiny — a consequence of their own deliberate choice, not an injustice from Allah.
The verse then concludes with a powerful call to reflection: "So travel through the land and observe how was the end of those who denied [the truth]." This is an invitation to every human being — to open their eyes, to travel, to explore, and to witness with their own sight the ruins of past civilizations, the remnants of destroyed nations, and the traces of those who rejected their prophets. Where are the mighty empires of 'Ad and Thamud? Where are the Pharaohs who claimed divinity? Their palaces are in ruins, their power is gone, and their legacy is nothing but a lesson for those who ponder.
This verse carries a timeless message for us today: the path to success is clear — worship Allah alone and avoid everything that competes with His authority. The messengers have all delivered the same call, and history stands as a witness to the fate of those who rejected it. So let us not be among the heedless. Let us learn from the past before we become a lesson for the future. The door of guidance is open, and Allah's mercy is vast — but it must be sought with sincerity, humility, and a heart that is ready to submit to its Lord.
