Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Phrases:

  • Taḥriṣ (تَحْرِصْ): To strive earnestly, to exert utmost effort, or to long intensely for something.
  • Hudāhum (هُدَاهُمْ): Their guidance; leading them to the path of truth and righteousness.
  • Yuḍill (يُضِلّ): He (Allah) leads astray; meaning one whom Allah has decreed to be misguided due to their persistent rejection of truth.
  • Nāṣirīn (نَاصِرِينَ): Helpers, protectors, or defenders who can avert harm or punishment.

Tafsir (Explanation):

O Messenger of Allah, even if you exhaust every ounce of your strength and pour your heart into guiding these polytheists—calling them with wisdom, patience, and compassion—know with certainty that the matter rests entirely with Allah. The One who created hearts and knows their innermost secrets is the only One who turns them toward faith. If Allah has decreed misguidance for someone because of their stubborn arrogance and deliberate rejection of the truth after it has become clear to them, then no power on earth or in the heavens can steer them back to the straight path.

This is not a limitation of Allah's ability—far from it! Rather, it is a manifestation of His perfect justice. When a soul repeatedly chooses falsehood over truth, closes its eyes to clear signs, and hardens its heart against divine reminders, Allah leaves it to its own misguided choices as a consequence of its rebellion. The Prophet ﷺ was the most merciful and compassionate of all people, yearning for humanity's salvation, yet even he could not force guidance into unwilling hearts. Allah reminds him—and through him, all believers—that our duty is only to convey the message with sincerity, while the outcome belongs solely to Allah.

Furthermore, these disbelievers who persist in their error have no protectors besides Allah. No idols, no ancestors, no wealth, no alliances, and no worldly power can shield them from Allah's punishment when it arrives. Their false deities cannot even help themselves, let alone their worshippers. On the Day of Judgment, they will find no one to intercede for them, no one to defend them, and no one to rescue them from the consequences of their choices.

A Da'wah Reflection:

How beautiful is this verse in teaching us the balance between effort and reliance upon Allah! It does not tell us to abandon calling people to the truth—rather, it encourages our utmost striving while purifying our intentions. The Prophet ﷺ himself wept for his people, saying, "My nation, my nation!" Yet he understood that guidance is a gift from Allah alone.

So, dear believer, never despair when you see people around you rejecting the truth despite your sincere efforts. Your reward is with Allah for your sincere endeavor, not for the results you achieve. Keep planting seeds of goodness, keep making du'a for those you love, and keep trusting that Allah's wisdom is perfect. Perhaps the one who rejects today will embrace faith tomorrow, or perhaps your words will benefit someone else in ways you cannot see. The Prophet ﷺ said: "By Allah, if Allah guides through you a single person, that is better for you than red camels" (the most valuable wealth).

And what a profound comfort it is to know that Allah is the Just, the All-Wise. He never misguides anyone except after they have chosen misguidance themselves. So rush to purify your hearts, cling to the Quran, and be among those whom Allah loves—for He has promised to guide those who sincerely seek Him. "And those who strive for Us—We will surely guide them to Our ways" (29:69).

📜 Verse 35-39 — An-Nahl

And those who associate others with Allah say, "If Allah had willed, we would not have worshipped anything other than Him, neither we nor our fathers, nor would we have forbidden anything through other than Him." Thus did those do before them. So is there upon the messengers except [the duty of] clear notification?
And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, [saying], "Worship Allah and avoid Taghut." And among them were those whom Allah guided, and among them were those upon whom error was [deservedly] decreed. So proceed through the earth and observe how was the end of the deniers.
[Even] if you should strive for their guidance, [O Muhammad], indeed, Allah does not guide those He sends astray, and they will have no helpers.
And they swear by Allah their strongest oaths [that] Allah will not resurrect one who dies. But yes - [it is] a true promise [binding] upon Him, but most of the people do not know.
[It is] so He will make clear to them [the truth of] that wherein they differ and so those who have disbelieved may know that they were liars.
