  • Al-Fasad (الْفَسَادُ): Corruption, decay, and disorder — encompassing drought, famine, loss of blessings, widespread diseases, epidemics, and turmoil.
  • Al-Barr (الْبَرِّ): The land, including inland regions and rural areas.
  • Al-Bahr (الْبَحْرِ): The sea, including coastlines, coastal cities, and areas near rivers and waterways.

  • Li-yudhiqahum (لِيُذِيقَهُم): So that He (Allah) makes them taste — meaning to let them experience the consequence.
  • Ba’d alladhi ‘amilu (بَعْضَ الَّذِي عَمِلُوا): Some of what they have done — i.e., a portion of the punishment their deeds merit, not necessarily all of it in this world.
  • La’allahum yarji‘un (لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ): So that perhaps they might return — meaning turn back to Allah in repentance and abandon sin.

Explanation of the Verse:

This profound verse unveils a universal truth that resonates across time and place: corruption and disorder on land and at sea are not random calamities or mere coincidences — they are direct consequences of human actions. When people persist in sin, injustice, and disobedience to their Creator, the very fabric of creation begins to unravel. Droughts strike, harvests fail, diseases spread, security collapses, and life becomes harsh — all as a reflection of what human hands have wrought.

The verse specifically mentions both land and sea because these encompass all human habitats and means of livelihood. The land provides food and shelter; the sea provides trade, sustenance, and transport. When corruption spreads in both, humanity feels the pinch everywhere — no one escapes the ripple effects of collective wrongdoing.

Yet — and here lies the beauty of divine mercy — Allah does not unleash full punishment upon people in this world. He says "some of what they have done," meaning only a fraction of the consequences are shown here, as a wake-up call, not a final verdict. The full reckoning is deferred to the Hereafter, but a taste of worldly consequences serves as a merciful warning.

The ultimate purpose is not vengeance but reformation. The verse concludes with "so that they might return" — return to Allah, return to righteousness, return to the natural state of goodness that aligns with human fitrah (innate disposition). It is a loving call from the Most Merciful: "Wake up, My servants! See the results of your choices, and come back to Me before it is too late."

This verse carries a timeless lesson for every generation. When we see environmental crises, social decay, economic hardship, or widespread illness, we should look inward before pointing outward. The remedy is not merely political or economic — it is spiritual. Repentance, prayer, justice, and moral reform are the keys to restoring balance in the world.

Dear reader, this is not a message of despair but of hope. No matter how far corruption has spread, the door of repentance remains wide open. Allah is Al-Tawwab (the Accepter of Repentance), and He waits for His servants to turn back to Him. When a community collectively returns to its Lord, He has promised to open blessings from the heavens and the earth. The cure for the world’s ills lies in the hearts of its people — purify them, and the world will heal. Let this verse be a mirror for your soul and a catalyst for positive change, starting with yourself and radiating outward to your family, community, and beyond.

📜 Verse 39-43 — Ar-Rum

And whatever you give for interest to increase within the wealth of people will not increase with Allah. But what you give in zakah, desiring the countenance of Allah - those are the multipliers.
Allah is the one who created you, then provided for you, then will cause you to die, and then will give you life. Are there any of your "partners" who does anything of that? Exalted is He and high above what they associate with Him.
Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by [reason of] what the hands of people have earned so He may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done that perhaps they will return [to righteousness].
Say, [O Muhammad], "Travel through the land and observe how was the end of those before. Most of them were associators [of others with Allah].
So direct your face toward the correct religion before a Day comes from Allah of which there is no repelling. That Day, they will be divided.
