Word Meanings:

  • Sīrū (سِيرُوا): Travel, move about.
  • Fa-nẓurū (فَانظُرُوا): Observe, reflect, and take heed with your eyes and hearts.
  • ʿĀqibah (عَاقِبَةُ): The final outcome, end, or consequence.
  • Mushrikīn (مُشْرِكِينَ): Those who associate partners with Allah in worship.

Explanation of the Verse:

O Messenger, say to those who deny your message and reject the truth: Travel through the earth, not merely for amusement or leisure, but with the eyes of reflection and contemplation. Look at the ruins of the nations that came before you — the people of Nūḥ (Noah), ʿĀd, Thamūd, and others who rejected their prophets. See what became of them in the end: their homes lie desolate, their palaces are in ruins, and their power has vanished completely. Their final outcome was the worst of all outcomes — destruction and humiliation in this world, and the punishment of the Hereafter awaiting them.

The reason for their ruin is then made clear: most of them were mushrikīn — they worshipped other deities alongside Allah, attributing partners to Him in worship. They did not merely commit minor sins; rather, they committed the greatest sin of all: shirk (associating partners with Allah). It was this shirk that led to their downfall and brought about their annihilation.

This verse carries a profound lesson for humanity: history is not merely a collection of stories, but a living witness to the truth. The ruins of ancient civilizations stand as silent testimonies to the consequences of arrogance, disbelief, and polytheism. When a people turn away from their Creator and worship false gods — whether those gods are idols, wealth, power, or desires — their fate is sealed.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect upon this verse with an open heart. Allah is not asking you to travel far and wide merely to see stones and sand; He is inviting you to witness the fingerprints of history and to learn from them. Every ruined civilization, every crumbling monument, every forgotten empire carries a message: the truth remains, and falsehood perishes.

This is an invitation to you, wherever you are, to look at the world around you with the eye of wisdom. See how nations that were once powerful and advanced have been reduced to lessons for those who come after them. And know that the same fate awaits anyone who persists in shirk and rejects the oneness of Allah.

The door of repentance is open, and the mercy of Allah is vast. Do not wait until you see the consequences with your own eyes in a way that leaves no room for return. Embrace tawḥīd (the oneness of Allah) today, worship Him alone, and follow the guidance of His final Messenger, ﷺ. For the one who turns to Allah in sincerity will find a reward greater than anything this world can offer — eternal bliss in the Hereafter, in the company of the prophets, the truthful, and the martyrs. And what a wonderful company that is!

Allah is the one who created you, then provided for you, then will cause you to die, and then will give you life. Are there any of your "partners" who does anything of that? Exalted is He and high above what they associate with Him.

Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by [reason of] what the hands of people have earned so He may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done that perhaps they will return [to righteousness].

So direct your face toward the correct religion before a Day comes from Allah of which there is no repelling. That Day, they will be divided.
44مَن كَفَرَ فَعَلَيْهِ كُفْرُهُ ۖ وَمَنْ عَمِلَ صَالِحًا فَلِأَنفُسِهِمْ يَمْهَدُونَ
Whoever disbelieves - upon him is [the consequence of] his disbelief. And whoever does righteousness - they are for themselves preparing,
