Tafsir (Explanation):
O you who have truly believed and submitted to Allah’s commands, do not enter the homes of the Prophet (peace be upon him) unless you have been given explicit permission to do so for a meal. And when you are invited, do not arrive early, sitting around and waiting for the food to be cooked. Instead, when you are called, enter at the proper time. Once you have eaten, leave promptly and do not linger for idle chatter or friendly conversation. This behavior—arriving early and staying long—caused the Prophet (peace be upon him) discomfort and hardship. He was too kind and shy to ask you to leave, but Allah, in His perfect wisdom, does not shy away from stating the truth and setting the correct boundaries.
Furthermore, when you need to ask the wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him) for any household item or need, ask them from behind a screen. This ruling is not merely a social custom; it is a divine command that protects the purity of your hearts and theirs. Seeing one another directly could open doors to whispers of Shaytan and impure thoughts. The veil shields both parties from temptation and keeps the hearts clean and focused on righteousness.
And it is not befitting for you to cause any harm or distress to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) in any way. Nor is it ever permissible for you to marry his wives after him, for they are your mothers in faith. Such an act would be a grave offense in the sight of Allah, a tremendous sin that carries immense weight.
This verse beautifully teaches us the importance of respect, boundaries, and consideration for the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) comfort and dignity. It also elevates the status of his noble wives and protects the sanctity of the Muslim home. As believers, we are called to embody this refined etiquette—not only in the Prophet’s time but in our daily interactions—by being mindful of others’ time, space, and feelings. This is the beautiful character of Islam: a religion that perfects manners, purifies hearts, and builds a community based on mutual respect and love. Let us take these lessons to heart and strive to implement them in our lives, for in doing so, we draw closer to Allah and His beloved Messenger.
