Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Yataama (الْيَتَامَىٰ): Orphans — children who have lost their father before reaching the age of maturity and are thus under the care of a guardian.
- Dhulman (ظُلْمًا): Wrongfully, unjustly, or by transgression — taking what is not lawful or permissible.
- Sa’eer (سَعِيرًا): A blazing, fiercely burning Fire — one of the names of Hell, indicating its intense heat and fury.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah, the Most High, issues a severe and terrifying warning to those who consume the wealth of orphans unjustly. This verse was revealed specifically concerning guardians who were entrusted with the property of orphans but misused their position — taking from that wealth what was not permitted to them, whether by direct seizure, deception, or any form of wrongful appropriation.
The verse employs a powerful and vivid metaphor: those who devour the wealth of orphans unjustly are, in reality, filling their bellies with Fire. This is not merely a figure of speech — it is a profound truth. What they consume in this world, thinking it to be food and sustenance, will transform into a blazing fire that will burn inside their stomachs on the Day of Resurrection. The very wealth they swallowed unlawfully will become a source of torment for them in the Hereafter.
Furthermore, Allah declares that they will "enter a blazing Fire" — meaning they will be cast into Hell and experience its scorching heat firsthand. The word *Sa’eer* emphasizes the intensity of this fire, which is kindled and raging, leaving no respite for those within it.
This verse serves as a stern deterrent, highlighting the sanctity of an orphan’s property in Islam. An orphan is vulnerable and defenseless, having lost the one who would protect and provide for them. To betray that trust is not merely a financial crime — it is an offense against Allah Himself, Who has taken it upon Himself to guard the rights of the weak.
A Call to Reflection and Righteousness:
Dear Muslim, let this verse awaken your conscience. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "I and the one who cares for an orphan will be together in Paradise like this" — and he held his index and middle fingers together. What a noble station awaits those who protect and preserve the wealth of orphans, treating it with the utmost care and returning it to them in full when they reach maturity!
Consider the contrast: the guardian who faithfully manages an orphan’s property will stand beside the Prophet in Paradise, while the one who devours it unjustly will be filled with fire in Hell. The choice is clear, and the stakes could not be higher.
Let this verse instill in you a profound sense of accountability. Every trust you hold — whether the wealth of an orphan, the rights of a neighbor, or the responsibilities of leadership — will be questioned on the Day of Judgment. Be among those who fulfill their trusts with excellence, for Allah loves those who are honest and upright. And know that the pleasure of Allah and His Paradise are far greater than any fleeting gain obtained through injustice.
May Allah protect us all from consuming what is unlawful and grant us the strength to uphold justice in all our affairs.
