Word Meanings:
- Wal-yakhsha (وَلْيَخْشَ): Let them fear — i.e., let them be mindful and apprehensive of Allah’s reckoning.
- Dhurriyyatan di'afan (ذُرِّيَّةً ضِعَافًا): Weak offspring — young, vulnerable children who cannot fend for themselves.
- Qawlan sadidan (قَوْلًا سَدِيدًا): A right, just, and upright saying — speech that is truthful, fair, and free from harm or injustice.
Explanation of the Verse:
This noble verse calls upon every person to place themselves in the position of others before acting — especially when dealing with orphans, the vulnerable, and those under their care. Allah commands: Let those who, if they were to die and leave behind young, helpless children, would fear for their well-being and security — let them fear Allah in this very life. Just as they would wish their own children to be protected, nurtured, and treated with kindness after their death, they must extend the same care and justice to the orphans and dependents placed under their charge.
The verse urges guardians, executors of wills, and all those who have authority over the affairs of orphans to be conscious of Allah in every matter: to preserve the wealth of the orphans, to raise them with excellence, to shield them from harm and oppression, and to never consume or misuse their rights. Furthermore, when advising a dying person about their will, one must speak with fairness — guiding them to be just, not to exceed the limits of bequests at the expense of rightful heirs, and not to deprive themselves of goodness by neglecting a righteous will.
In essence, the believer is taught a profound moral principle: treat others as you would wish to be treated. If you fear for your own children’s future, then extend that same mercy and justice to the children of others. This is the path of taqwa (God-consciousness) — a heart that feels the pain of others and a tongue that always speaks what is right and beneficial.
A Da'wah Reflection:
How beautiful is this Islamic teaching! It plants the seeds of empathy, justice, and social responsibility in the heart of every believer. Islam does not merely command us to avoid harming orphans — it commands us to love them as we love our own, to protect them as we protect our own flesh and blood. Imagine a society where every guardian treats the orphan like their own child, where every advisor speaks with fairness, and where every heart trembles with the fear of Allah when dealing with the vulnerable. That society would be a haven of mercy, trust, and harmony. This verse is an invitation to elevate our character, to purify our intentions, and to draw closer to Allah by serving His creation. Let us embrace this divine guidance with open hearts, knowing that whoever cares for the orphans will be with the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in Paradise, as close as two fingers of one hand. And whoever speaks with justice and acts with mercy will find that Allah never lets their goodness go to waste — for He is the Best of guardians and the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.
