📖 English Meaning
Allah instructs you concerning your children: for the male, what is equal to the share of two females. But if there are [only] daughters, two or more, for them is two thirds of one's estate. And if there is only one, for her is half. And for one's parents, to each one of them is a sixth of his estate if he left children. But if he had no children and the parents [alone] inherit from him, then for his mother is one third. And if he had brothers [or sisters], for his mother is a sixth, after any bequest he [may have] made or debt. Your parents or your children - you know not which of them are nearest to you in benefit. [These shares are] an obligation [imposed] by Allah. Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.

Translation — Tafsir

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Meanings of Key Words:

  • Yūṣīkum (يُوصِيكُمُ): Allah's solemn command and directive to His servants.
  • Ḥaẓẓ (حَظّ): The designated share or portion of inheritance.
  • Fawqa ithnatayni (فَوْقَ اثْنَتَيْنِ): More than two, meaning three or more daughters.
  • Walad (وَلَد): A child, whether male or female, or even a grandchild through a son.
  • Ikhwah (إِخْوَة): Siblings, two or more, whether full, paternal, or maternal.
  • Farīḍah (فَرِيضَة): An obligatory decree and a fixed divine allocation.

The Tafsir (Explanation):

In this profound verse, Allah, the Most Wise, addresses the believers with a command that regulates the distribution of inheritance among children and parents. This is not a mere suggestion but a divine ordinance that ensures justice, preserves family bonds, and removes the greed and conflict that often accompany the passing of a loved one.

Allah begins by stating that for your children, the male shall have the share equivalent to that of two females. This is not a sign of preference for males in worth, but a reflection of the financial responsibilities Islam places upon men, who are obligated to support their families, pay the dowry, and bear the financial burdens of the household. The woman, on the other hand, retains her share entirely for herself, with no obligation to spend it on anyone. Thus, the wisdom behind this division is profound and rooted in social justice.

If the deceased leaves behind two or more daughters, and no son, they collectively receive two-thirds of the estate. If only one daughter is left, she receives one half. This guarantees that daughters are never left destitute and are always provided for from the wealth of their kin.

For the parents of the deceased, each one receives one-sixth of the estate if the deceased has left a child. If there is no child, and the parents are the sole heirs, the mother receives one-third, and the father receives the remainder. However, if the deceased has two or more siblings, the mother's share is reduced to one-sixth, so that the father, who bears the responsibility of caring for these siblings, receives a larger portion.

All of these allocations are to be executed only after fulfilling two conditions: first, any debts owed by the deceased must be settled, and second, any valid will (waṣiyyah) that the deceased made, up to one-third of the estate, must be honored. This order—debt first, then will, then inheritance—ensures that no one's rights are violated and that the deceased's obligations are met before the distribution of wealth.

Allah then reminds us of a profound truth: "Your parents and your children—you do not know which of them is more beneficial to you." This is a gentle yet powerful correction to human shortsightedness. We may think that favoring one relative over another in our will is wise, but we cannot foresee the future. The child we deem less deserving today may become the one who prays for us, gives charity on our behalf, and carries our legacy of goodness. The parent we overlook may be the one whose supplications are the means of our salvation. Allah, the All-Knowing, sees all outcomes and has therefore legislated what is truly best for us.

This verse concludes with the words: "An obligation from Allah. Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Wise." This is a declaration that the laws of inheritance are not arbitrary but are a divine trust. Allah, who created us and knows our nature, has designed these laws to bring about harmony, prevent disputes, and elevate the ummah. When we accept and implement these laws with sincerity, we are not merely dividing wealth—we are submitting to the wisdom of the Creator and drawing closer to Him.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is a shining example of the perfection of Islamic law. It addresses the most sensitive and potentially divisive moments in family life—the passing of a loved one—with clarity, mercy, and justice. Imagine a society where every individual knows their rights and responsibilities, where no one is deprived, and where the distribution of wealth strengthens rather than breaks family ties. This is the society Islam seeks to build. By following these divine injunctions, we not only secure our worldly affairs but also earn the pleasure of Allah, who has promised immense reward for those who obey His commands. Let us embrace these laws with open hearts, knowing that they are a mercy from our Lord, who loves us more than we can ever comprehend.

📜 Verse 9-13 — An-Nisa

And let those [executors and guardians] fear [injustice] as if they [themselves] had left weak offspring behind and feared for them. So let them fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice.
Indeed, those who devour the property of orphans unjustly are only consuming into their bellies fire. And they will be burned in a Blaze.

And for you is half of what your wives leave if they have no child. But if they have a child, for you is one fourth of what they leave, after any bequest they [may have] made or debt. And for the wives is one fourth if you leave no child. But if you leave a child, then for them is an eighth of what you leave, after any bequest you [may have] made or debt. And if a man or woman leaves neither ascendants nor descendants but has a brother or a sister, then for each one of them is a sixth. But if they are more than two, they share a third, after any bequest which was made or debt, as long as there is no detriment [caused]. [This is] an ordinance from Allah, and Allah is Knowing and Forbearing.
These are the limits [set by] Allah, and whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger will be admitted by Him to gardens [in Paradise] under which rivers flow, abiding eternally therein; and that is the great attainment.
