- يُحَرِّفُونَ الْكَلِمَ مِن بَعْدِ مَوَاضِعِهِ — They distort the words (of Allah) from their proper contexts and meanings, twisting them to suit their desires.
- فِتْنَتَهُ — His trial or misguidance; the punishment and deviation Allah decrees for them.
- خِزْيٌ — Humiliation, disgrace, and shame.
Explanation of the Verse:
O Messenger of Allah, do not let grief overwhelm you because of those who race headlong into disbelief and work tirelessly to oppose you. Among them are the hypocrites who declare with their tongues, "We believe," while their hearts are utterly devoid of faith. They are not your concern, for Allah is your Protector and will grant you victory over them.
Also, do not be saddened by the Jews who hasten toward rejection of your prophethood. They are a people who eagerly listen to falsehood, accepting whatever their rabbis fabricate, and they act as spies and messengers for others of their kind who refuse to come to you. These distant leaders distort the words of Allah in the Torah, altering the divine rulings after having understood them. They instruct their followers, saying: "If Muhammad's judgment aligns with what we have changed, then accept it; but if it contradicts our alterations, then beware of him and reject his ruling."
Know, O Messenger, that whoever Allah wills to lead astray and test with misguidance, you will never be able to protect him from Allah's decree, nor can you guide him to the truth. These people—the hypocrites and the Jews described here—are those whom Allah has not willed to purify their hearts from the filth of disbelief. For them, in this worldly life, there is disgrace and humiliation, and in the Hereafter, they will face a tremendous punishment—the torment of the Fire.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer. It reminds us that the Prophet ﷺ, despite his immense compassion and concern for humanity, was not responsible for guiding those whose hearts Allah has sealed. The Prophet's duty was only to convey the message clearly; guidance rests solely in the Hands of Allah.
How beautiful is this reassurance for every caller to Islam and every believer who strives for goodness! When you see people turning away from the truth, hastening toward falsehood, and distorting the words of Allah, do not let sadness consume your heart. Your duty is to convey, to advise, and to exemplify—not to force hearts into submission.
This verse also warns us against the dangerous traits of hypocrisy and distortion. The hypocrites claimed faith with their lips while their hearts were empty, and the People of the Book twisted divine revelation for worldly gain. Let us examine our own hearts: Are our words and deeds in harmony? Do we accept the truth wholeheartedly, or do we bend it to fit our desires?
Allah's wisdom is perfect. He tests whom He wills and guides whom He wills, and His decree is just. The promise of disgrace for the disbelievers in this world and severe punishment in the Hereafter is a source of comfort for the believers—a reminder that truth will always prevail, and falsehood will inevitably perish.
So, dear believer, hold fast to your faith, purify your intentions, and trust in Allah's plan. Do not let the actions of those who hasten toward disbelief sadden you, for Allah is with you, and His victory is near.
