Explanation of the Verse:
This verse addresses the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — and through him, every believer — with a profound rhetorical question: "Do you not know?" It is not a question of ignorance, but a call to awaken the heart and mind to an undeniable truth. Allah (God) alone holds the complete and absolute dominion over the heavens and the earth. He is the Creator, the Sustainer, and the sole Disposer of all affairs. Nothing moves, nothing exists, and nothing happens except within His kingdom and by His will.
Within this dominion, Allah exercises His will with perfect wisdom. He punishes whom He wills — and His punishment is always just, never oppressive, and only befalls those who deserve it. And He forgives whom He wills — and His forgiveness is vast, encompassing, and granted out of His sheer mercy and kindness, even for the greatest of sins when He chooses to pardon. The verse beautifully balances fear and hope: fear of His justice, and hope in His mercy. No one can question His decisions, for His knowledge is complete and His wisdom is absolute.
The verse concludes with a powerful affirmation: "And Allah is over all things competent." This means that His power is limitless. He is not hindered by time, space, or circumstance. Punishing and forgiving are both equally easy for Him. This is a source of great comfort for the believer — no matter how heavy your sins may be, Allah's forgiveness is within reach; and no matter how powerful an oppressor may seem, Allah's punishment is certain when He wills it.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, let this verse fill your heart with both reverence and hope. Allah's dominion is not distant or abstract — it is the reality you live in every moment. When you sin, do not despair, for His mercy is greater than your failure. When you see injustice, do not lose faith, for His justice is inevitable. Turn to Him sincerely, for He is the King who can forgive you in an instant and transform your life. The door of repentance is open, and the One who holds all power is calling you to return to Him. Will you not answer that call today?
