Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Sammā‘ūna lil-kadhib: Those who listen eagerly to falsehood, readily accepting and spreading lies.
- Akkālūna lis-suḥt: Those who consume what is unlawful and forbidden, such as bribery, usury, and ill-gotten wealth. The word *suḥt* refers to anything that brings disgrace and destroys blessings.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse describes a group of people—specifically some of the Jews of Madinah—who combined two terrible traits: they were avid listeners to lies and false testimony, and they were consumers of unlawful earnings, such as bribes and usury. They would come to you, O Prophet, seeking your judgment in their disputes, not out of respect for justice, but hoping to find a ruling that would serve their corrupt interests.
Allah gave His Messenger a choice in this matter: if they came seeking his arbitration, he could either judge between them or decline to do so. This was a divine concession, as these people were not sincere in their pursuit of truth. However, Allah reassured him that if he chose to turn away from their cases, they could never harm him in the least—for Allah’s protection was with him, and their schemes were powerless against the truth he carried.
But if the Prophet chose to judge between them, then he was commanded to do so with absolute fairness and justice, even though they were enemies of Islam and people of deceit. Allah does not command justice only for believers; rather, justice is a universal principle that applies to all, friend or foe. And Allah loves those who uphold justice and equity in all their affairs.
This verse carries a profound lesson for all believers: justice must never be compromised, regardless of who is involved. Even when dealing with those who are hostile or dishonest, a Muslim’s commitment to fairness remains unwavering. The Prophet ﷺ was a model of this perfect justice, and his example teaches us that truth and equity are the foundations of a righteous society.
A Call to Reflection:
How beautiful is this divine guidance! It shows us that Islam does not seek revenge or oppression, even against those who harbor ill intentions. Instead, it elevates the standard of justice to a level where even one’s enemies are treated with fairness. This is the nobility of Islamic character—a character that the world is in desperate need of today. Let us strive to embody this justice in our own lives, in our homes, our workplaces, and our communities. For Allah’s love is reserved for those who are just, and His promise of reward for the equitable is immense. Embrace this virtue, and you will find peace in your heart and honor in this life and the next.
