Explanation of the Verse:
O Prophet, your Lord knows exactly how you stand in night prayer — sometimes for less than two-thirds of the night, sometimes half, and sometimes a third — and He knows that a group of your companions stands with you in this devotion. Allah alone measures the night and the day with perfect precision; nothing escapes His knowledge. He knew that you and your followers would never be able to calculate the exact hours of the night with such accuracy, and that this would place great hardship upon you. So, out of His immense mercy and compassion, He lightened the obligation upon you. He commanded you to recite from the Qur'an in your night prayers whatever is easy for you.
Allah also knew that among you there would be those who are ill and unable to bear the strain of long night prayers, others who travel across the earth seeking His lawful provision through trade and work, and still others who fight in His cause — striving to raise His word and spread His religion. For all of these, the full night prayer would be a burden. So again, He says: recite whatever is easy for you from the Qur'an.
Then He turns your attention to the essential duties: establish the obligatory prayers with full devotion, give the obligatory charity (zakah), and lend Allah a goodly loan by spending in charity and good deeds. Whatever good you send forward for yourselves in this life — whether prayer, charity, kindness, or any act of righteousness — you will find it with Allah on the Day of Judgment, far better in quality and far greater in reward than anything you left behind. Finally, He commands you to seek His forgiveness constantly, for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear believer, see how your Lord deals with you — not with harshness, but with gentleness and mercy. He knows your weaknesses, your illnesses, your travels, and your struggles, and He has made His religion easy for you. He does not ask of you what you cannot bear. So seize this opportunity: pray what you can, give what you can, and do good whenever you can — for every single act of goodness is stored with Allah, and you will find it on the Day when you need it most, greater and more rewarding than you ever imagined. And never forget to seek His forgiveness, for His mercy embraces all who turn to Him. Let this verse inspire you to draw closer to Allah with love, hope, and sincere effort — for He is truly the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
