Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- "Dīnukum" (your religion): Your creed, beliefs, and practices that you have chosen for yourselves.
- "Wa liya dīn" (and for me is my religion): The faith and way of life that I follow, which is Islam.
Explanation of the Verse:
This concluding verse of Surah Al-Kafirun delivers a decisive and final separation between truth and falsehood. Allah commands His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to declare to the disbelievers of Quraysh: "For you is your religion, and for me is my religion."
The meaning is profound and clear: You have your religion—the polytheism, idol worship, and false beliefs that you have invented and stubbornly cling to—and I have my religion—the pure monotheism, the worship of Allah alone, and the complete submission to His will that He has revealed to me. There is no compromise, no mixing, and no middle ground between these two paths.
This verse establishes the principle of complete disavowal from falsehood while affirming one's own faith with certainty and pride. It is not a call to hostility or aggression, but rather a declaration of peaceful coexistence in matters of belief, with the understanding that each party will be held accountable before Allah for what they have chosen. The believer does not dilute his faith to appease others, nor does he force his beliefs upon anyone. The truth stands clear from falsehood, and every soul will reap what it has sown.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse teaches us a beautiful lesson in steadfastness and clarity. As Muslims, we are called to be firm in our faith, proud of our identity, and unwavering in our worship of Allah alone—just as the Prophet (peace be upon him) was. At the same time, we are reminded that guidance is in Allah's hands, and our duty is to convey the truth with wisdom and beautiful preaching, not to force or coerce. Let this verse inspire you to hold fast to your religion with confidence, knowing that your Lord is sufficient for you, and that the ultimate victory belongs to those who remain true to Him. The Qur'an is a light that illuminates the path, and this surah is a shield that protects the believer's heart from doubt and compromise. Embrace it, live by it, and let it be a source of strength in every situation.
