Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- عَابِدُونَ (Aabidoon): Worshippers, those who devote themselves to worship.
- مَا أَعْبُدُ (Ma a'budu): What I worship — meaning Allah alone, with sincere, pure monotheism.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse completes the reciprocal declaration of disassociation between the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the disbelievers of Quraysh. After stating in the previous verse that he does not worship what they worship, Allah now reveals that they, likewise, will never worship what he worships — namely, Allah alone, without any partner or associate.
The meaning here is not merely about the future tense, but rather a definitive statement about their reality: their worship is fundamentally different from his. Their worship is tainted with shirk (polytheism) — they associate idols and false deities with Allah, while his worship is pure tawheed (monotheism), devoted entirely to the One True God. The Prophet (peace be upon him) is saying: "You do not worship as I worship, and you never will, because your worship is built on falsehood while mine is built on truth."
This verse was revealed concerning specific individuals among the disbelievers whom Allah knew would never embrace faith — their hearts were sealed against guidance. It serves as a clear, final separation between the path of truth and the path of falsehood.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound lesson for every Muslim: the purity of our worship is what defines us. When we worship Allah alone, with sincerity and devotion, we stand on solid ground that no force of falsehood can shake. The Prophet (peace be upon him) did not compromise his worship to please others, nor did he water down his message. He stood firm, and Allah honored him with victory.
Dear reader, this is an invitation to examine your own worship: Is it purely for Allah? Does it follow the way of the Prophet (peace be upon him)? The beauty of Islam is that it calls you to a direct, unmediated relationship with your Creator — no idols, no intermediaries, no false gods. This is the path of true freedom and peace. Embrace it with an open heart, for it is the path that leads to eternal success in this life and the Hereafter.
